Publisher's summary
Life is simple in Ben's small town until an attack brings the arrival of exciting strangers straight out of a story. Before Ben understands what is happening, he embarks on a dangerous journey to help his friends. A mage, demons, thieves, and assassins are just a few of the perils he will face while trying to make it to safety. But things aren't always what they seem, and safety is a fragile concept when the destructive behaviors of the powerful are exercised unchecked. In Ben's world - like our own - politics, the economy, and military might create a system to keep the elite in power at the expense of the common man. As the series unfolds and Ben's knowledge and skills grow, he will have to decide if he wants to live within the system, flee from it, or break it.

The assassination of heroes was once a warning... for an invasion that nearly destroyed the world. Nations were slaughtered, cities were erased from existence, and defending armies were crushed into oblivion. In weeks, all life stood on the verge of extinction. But the end did not come. Instead the black horde vanished, leaving terrified survivors... and rumors. As the centuries passed the holocaust faded into legend, and finally myth. Across the southern sea a gifted young man is completing his training.

In the centuries since rising up against a cruel, twisted dynasty, the Seven Cities have done much to move past their horrid histories, the memories of ancient monarchs who once fed on the life and blood of their own people. Those with a talent for magic are no longer hounded and slain. The lands beyond the Cities are safe, spared the atrocities the Alescuans once wrought upon them. For 300 years, there has been peace. Story
When Venick is caught wandering the elflands, he knows the penalty is death. Desperate, he lies about his identity in hopes the elves will spare his life. Ellina doesn't trust the human, and not merely because he speaks the language of men. Men lie. In elvish, however, lying is impossible. In a moment of intuition, Ellina decides to give Venick a chance: learn elvish, reveal his truths, and she will set him free. That is not, of course, what happens.

Story
An evil has risen in the land, one that, if not dealt with, threatens to start a war which would include the gods themselves. To counter it, the realm must call on its greatest heroes, its most courageous adventurers. Unfortunately, those great heroes, those brave adventurers, are all busy - being dead mostly. So it is left to Dannen Ateran, known in his youth as the Bloody Butcher, but more recently as the passed-out drunk at the table in the corner, to lead his companions against an army of the dead.

Story
The Academy of Chaenbalu has stood against magic for centuries. Hidden from the world, acting from the shadows, it trains its students to detect and retrieve magic artifacts, which it jealously guards from the misuse of others. Because magic is dangerous: Something that heals can also harm, and a power that aids one person may destroy another. Of the academy’s many students, only the most skilled can become Avatars - warrior thieves, capable of infiltrating the most heavily guarded vaults - and only the most determined can be trusted to resist the lure of magic.

Story
Tasmarin is a place of dragons, a plane cut off from all other worlds, where dragons can be dragons and humans can be dinner. It's a place of islands, forests, mountains, and wild oceans, filled with magical denizens. Fionn - the black dragon - calmly tells anyone who will listen that he's going to destroy the place. Of course he's a joker, a troublemaker, and a dragon of no fixed abode. No one ever believes him. He's dead serious.

good story aside from one character doing a 180
this was a good read and I do recommend it. I only had a small issue with one of the characters towards the very end. this character actions come off very out of character. there's no issue with the character doing what they did. it's like if that character was going to do that. their motivation should have been more fleshed out not some out of nowhere betrayal which left me both super annoyed / confused at the end of this book. but hopefully that character's motivation will get fleshed out in the next book and hopefully they don't turn this character into a future villain that would come off so forced

Just a warning
I generally don't review but feel it should be said that the comparison to the wheel of time(before Brandon Sanderson did whatever that was he did to the ending) is very loose. It could have been inspired by the wheel or even inspired by a second hand impression of the wheel but it would be more accurate to say it would share a greatly simplified and abridged outline with the work. This book is well written and a fine story in its own right. It should not be compared to other works in order to be enjoyed. The writer and theirs work will evolve and surely be appreciated by many. I wish luck and success to the author as I wish enjoyment and satisfaction to the readers.

Ira good but.....
I really like this book but the protagonist just doesn't really seem to be anything special. It's hard to pin it down but the progression isn't anywhere near as it should be.
