Publisher's Summary

An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former first lady of the United States

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As first lady of the United States of America - the first African American to serve in that role - she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the United States and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites listeners into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations - and whose story inspires us to do the same.

Editorial Review

The memoir we're Becoming eager to hear

Her dance moves. Her vegetable garden. Her advocacy for girls everywhere. Her humility despite being one of the best-known names in the world. There are so many things to love about Michelle Obama that even those who might disagree with her husband’s politics admit to being fans. So much anticipation surrounds this, her official memoir, and specifics about what it will ultimately contain are few, but we can safely bet on it to be inspiring. No matter which boxes you check on your ballot, it’s hard not to be in awe of what this remarkable woman achieved in her path from the South Side of Chicago to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. and beyond. When she revealed the book cover, the author tweeted: “As I prepare to share Becoming this fall, I hope you’ll also think about your own story, and trust that it will help you become whoever you aspire to be.” Can you imagine what it’ll sound like in her own words, via her own strong, familiar voice? I, for one, can hardly wait. —Courtney R., Audible Editor

It's exactly what I thought it would be

The best part was the first half where she actually discussed herself and her upbringing. Then it basically turned into a replay of the Obama presidency, understandably so, I mean that consumed her life for 8+ years. It's basically exactly what I thought it would be, her regurgitating the same lines that President Obama, and the MSM force fed us for years.

So boring! Difficult to get through.

If one likes Michelle then it is probably is ok. I had no opinions before I read so I read it from a neutral perspective. It was simply a waste of time.

Quite a disappointment

I was really looking forward to this book, because my friend found everyday she “couldn’t wait to get in her car to listen to this audio book while she was driving”. Turned out the book was so boring and fake that I felt I was wasting my time. I liked Michelle Obama quite a lot before I read this book, but ended up sort of dislike her after I finished the book. Her story before Obama running the office was interesting, but once it got into politics, everything just went south. It’s quite easy to tell that every story she was telling was just to make excuses and perfect the stories that she was questioned about at some point. I also didn’t like the hatred towards whites and Republicans throughout the book. (I am neither a white nor a Republican, so I am not biased that way.) She appeared to be quite an ungraceful person. Based on this book, I don’t even think she was as half graceful as Laura Bush. I lost my interest half way into this book, but I still tried really hard to finish it in hope that it would get better at some point. Unfortunately, until the end, it never got better. It was completely a waste of time. In fact, sometimes,it made my driving quite suffering as I couldn’t help rolling my eyes.

great story weighted with tedium

The sound editing was repeatedly flawed. The story seemed to be a veneered version of a deeper truth. Much of the collegial accolades would've been better situated in an acknowledgement chapter. I want to know more from Mrs Robinson.

I wanted to like it...

I LOVE Michelle Obama, but frankly, I found the book boring. I didn't finish it. But I still love Michelle Obama!

Love Michelle But Couldn't Finish

Love Michelle Obama, but I thought it was pretty boring. 30% of it was amazing and enticing, but the rest was kind of mundane. She reads at a very slow speed too. I think I was expecting an autobiography as Trevor Noah's was, but it didn't live up to that for me. My review opinion may be skewed as I tend not to like the autobiographies, but thought hers might be as good as Trevor's.

Had different expectations.

It's not a bad book. I just had different expectations. Being an Obama family fan and with an expectation that this book comes from Mrs Obama, I wanted to read her journey, her contribution to the presidentship. We do get that but in patches.
"I was not bossy, I was just confident." This line automatically set an expectation that we are going to get an overhaulish account from the ex-FLOTUS. But the book losses the track and then what we get in almost half the book is Mr Obama - the President's journey. By the time, we get back to Michelle Obama's experiences again, the book is more than 3/4th done. Maybe, the expectations were set accordingly through various post book tours that this is more about a family journey - a political change that came across with Obama presidency. But with a title like Becoming, a reader actually feels misled that what he ended up with was not what the book tried to deliver.

Boring

I struggled to finish it. I did learn a few interesting things but mostly it was about the Obama's being black & overcoming things. I'm happy for them but found the book boring.

We still don’t deserve Michelle Obama

This was a great way to spend twenty hours. I didn’t think I could long for The Obamas any more than I already did, but this book reminds you how we had smart, gracious people in the White House.

Heartwarming, inspiring and just wonderful.

I loved every moment of this book. She doesn't try to sugarcoat her struggles and really shared in a way that she hasn't before. I feel privileged to have read about our FFL's extraordinary and inspiring journey. I also feel empowered to make my own journey, my own.

Wonderful

I had high hopes, and at first I thought the story moved a bit slow - but there was a reason for every little story told. The book ties her stories wonderfully together, and I have a much better undertaking of who Michelle Obama is and what drives her. I am left so very impressed and utterly inspired.

Fascinating & Encouraging

Endearing and enthralling to hear the very ordinary but incredible story of Michelle and her family. Such figures of hope.
