Story
The hideous Walsingford Hall is home to an odd assortment of coves…The vile premises belong to Sir Buckstone, who is in a little financial difficulty. So for a little monetary help he puts a roof over the heads of people like (among others) Tubby Vanringham, the adoring slave of cold-hearted Miss Whittaker. His brother Joe has fallen head over heels for Sir Buck’s daughter, Jane. She, however, only has eyes for Adrian Peake, who has already formed a liaison with the terrifying - but superbly wealthy - Princess Dwornitzchek. Is there no end to the confusion?

Story
Most of the big money belongs to Torquil Paterson Frisby, the dyspeptic American millionaire--but that doesn't stop him wanting more out of it. His niece, the beautiful Ann Moon, is engaged to "Biscuit", Lord Biskerton, who doesn't have very much of the stuff and so he has to escape to Valley Fields to hide from his creditors. Meanwhile, his old school friend Berry Conway, who is working for Frisby, himself falls for Ann--just as Biscuit falls for her friend Kitchie Valentine. Life in the world of Wodehouse can sometimes become a little complicated.

We find ourselves in the austerity of the 1950s, when England's aristocracy was feeling the pinch. Bertie Wooster has gone to a residential self-help school to learn how to darn his socks. Until he re-emerges, Jeeves has signed up with Bill Rowcester (pronounced Roaster), an earl who is failing to make ends meet in trade, and yearning to sell his stately home, which has charm and damp in equal measure. In his new environment Jeeves is required to exert his mammoth brain to what would be breaking point for any normal intellect.

Jim pretends to be himself - a beautiful display of Wodehousean logic; hilarious indeed!

Publisher's summary
One of P. G. Wodehouse's most enticing later works, Barmy in Wonderland is a gem of a novel from the master of social satire and comedy.
Cyril Fotheringay-Phipps, known to his friends as Barmy, has made a poor decision. He has invested $10,000 in a stage production that seems doomed from the start in order to be near the woman of his dreams - Miss Dinty Moore. Will he find true love or merely lose a fortune?
Featuring a cast of sharply drawn characters, from haughty film stars and monstrous producers to detestable critics and total divas, Barmy in Wonderland is a brilliant satire on life behind the curtains.

Hilarious, fascinating, and a roller coaster of dizzying, historical what-ifs, Napoleon's Hemorrhoids is a potpourri for serious historians and casual history buffs. In one of Phil Mason's many revelations, you'll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. You'll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield.

“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.

Here, we have a glorious ensemble of Woodhousian characters knocking elbows to foreheads in the elegant and grand Blandings Castle. Meet Freddy Threepwood, the vagrant son of doddering old Lord Emsworth of Blandings Castle. Freddy has recently become engaged to Aline Peters, the American heiress of an irascible father. The snag is that Freddy seems to have at one point become enamored of a struggling actress, Joan Valentine, and written some impetuous and imprudent letters to her.

One of Wodehouse's most entertaining raconteurs is sitting in the Angler's Rest, sipping hot whiskey and lemon. Webster's Dictionary gives the meaning of the word "miasma" as "an infection floating in the air; a deadly exhalation". And in the opinion of Mr. Robert Ferguson, that description, though perhaps a little too flattering, on the whole summed up Master Roland Bean pretty satisfactorily. Until the previous day, Master Bean had served Mr. Ferguson in the capacity of office-boy. But there was that about Master Bean which made it practically impossible for anyone to employ him for long.

It takes a lot of effort for Jimmy Crocker to become Piccadilly Jim – nights on the town roistering, headlines in the gossip columns, a string of broken hearts and breaches of promise. Eventually he becomes rather good at it and manages to go to pieces with his eyes open. But no sooner has Jimmy cut a wild swathe through fashionable London than his terrifying Aunt Nesta decides he must mend his ways. He then falls in love with the girl he has hurt most of all, and after that things get complicated. In a dizzying plot, impersonations pile on impersonations....

Lady Wetherby had a big, soft heart, and she hated hurting her fellows. As a rule, when she had bad news to impart to any one, she administered the blow so gradually and with such mystery as to the actual facts that the victim, having passed through the various stages of imagined horrors, was genuinely relieved, when she actually came to the point, to find that all that had happened was that he had lost all his money.

A Visit to Wonderland
Colored by Wodehouse’s own experiences in Broadway and Hollywood, fueled by the standard Wodehousian motivations of romance, money, and alcohol, this classic romp remains as entertaining as the day it emerged from the Master’s Smith-Corona almost 7 decades ago.
As with his other Wodehouse recordings, Simon Vance delivers a fine comic performance. And I second D's request for more: especially Do Butlers Burgle Banks? and French Leave.

Wodehouse completists want more
Simon Vance is one of the most accomplished readers out there, and here he tries his hand (throat? tongue?) at Wodehouse. He does a fine job with the character’s dialogue, though his rendering of the prose lacks the exuberance of the late (and great) Jonathan Cecil. Frankly, it's a bit like an opera star crossing over to operetta, or doing a Broadway show tunes album. Or it might be the sound of Vance's fine rendition of Proust's Swann's Way triggering involuntary memories/associations in this listener. Nevertheless, the ear adjusts, and Wodehouse works his magic regardless.
So far his Wodehouse recordings have been of lesser known works that no one else has recorded yet, so they are very welcome additions to the catalog. I hope there is more to come. How about: If I Were You, French Leave, and Do Butlers Burgle Banks?

Partly recycled and sluggish, snappier ending
As another reviewer reveals, there are slow and dull parts. Many phrases, in the first 2/3 especially, are used many times in other PGW works. But the characterizations (especially of an attorney) and dialogue and the happenstance of several likeable characters really pick up in the end. Most notable: PGW is great at writing witty women.

An amazing story with amazing characters
This is a riveting story with a number of unexpected twists. Best I like Wodehouse’s witty and absurd descriptions of characters and trivial events made to look important by comparisons to cataclysmal events in history or to characters in Shakespeare, Milton or the Bible. Barmy Cyril Fotheringay-Phipps is the protagonist. He is mild and maybe a bit like Leopold in the Producers and is easily duped. But for me the great character in the story is the bombastic actor Melvyn Potter. His analogies and drunken twisted sense of reasoning kept me roaring with laughter.

Great Start, Weak Middle
This book had a very strong start and had me laughing out loud. I was prepared to like it immensely. For a good deal of the middle, however, it lacked plot and I actually sped up the reading in order to get through. Wodehouse pulled it together again in the end and I enjoyed the last 40 minutes or so. Overall, I'd say it's worth reading for a lover of his writing. For someone new to Wodehouse looking for more Drones club characters, I would turn them to some of the short story collections instead.
