Publisher's summary

Her bakery is going to the dogs!

Abused and abandoned by her former owners, the unadoptable boxer Baker finds a safe haven at Pretty Paws, the only no-kill shelter in town. But when she's scared, she can't help defending herself, even from the people who want to help her.

Dumped by her cheating fiancé and mourning the loss of her mother to cancer, Maeve dreams of opening a bakery. But the only way she can afford that is to win a baking contest. Too bad her high school nemesis has entered, too, and is using her rich daddy's money to stack the deck against Maeve.

When Maeve stops by Pretty Paws, Baker chooses the best batch of pastries with her super sensitive nose. It's not exactly love at first site, but when Maeve learns that time is almost up on Baker's stay at the shelter, she agrees to take her home for a couple of weeks to reset the clock.

Can Maeve and Baker learn to trust each other, or will life find a way to crush their hopes for a fresh start?

Baker's Dozen is the first book in the Soul Mutts series - heartwarming stories of lost dogs finding new homes with the humans they were born to heal.

Bakers dozen

For the most part, this was a good book at sometimes. I think it was a little simplistic and childish. I think the exchanges between Maeve and her nemesis jazzy were a little juvenile. I mean yes, there are adults who bully others, but I think it could’ve been made to be more believable. Also, the dog talking and responding in human form was a little much. So some of the book was juvenile, but the basic characters in the story line was really good.

Baker’s Dozen

I love books about animal that allows the animals themselves to tell you their side of the story. That’s what drew me to read Book 1 of the Soul Mutts series. The story revolves around a badly abused Boxer mix, named Baker, living in an animal shelter & Maeve, a young, recently dumped woman who has had a fear of dogs since being badly bitten during her childhood. Maeve has always wanted to own her bakery but she just keeps having bad breaks in her life & her dreams of her own bakery stay just beyond her reach. Baker just wants to stay huddled @ the back of her cage trembling in fear of humans. What are the odds that Baker & Maeve can ever be comfortable around one another?

A Dog's Tale

Enjoyed the read! Interesting plot. A novel narrated by a human and her dog that draws you into their inner conflicts.

Cute!

The story was cute. I did get tired of hearing about how terrified the main character was of being bit and the narrator reminded me of one of those tik tok voice overs periodically, but overall, I would listen to it again. I really enjoyed it.

This heroine is a full blown neurotic!

While the story had the potential to be a sweet story, the extreme vacillation between normal & neurotic thinking of Maeve made me want to turn it off many times. I somehow knew it would turn out for the best so I stuck it out to the end! Even the presence of a dog at a baking competition was ludicrous even though she didn’t bring him. The story would have been a good one without all the histrionics!
