Publisher's summary

Stormy Morgan left her hometown of Shadow Hills, Michigan, with one goal: To write the great American novel and strike it rich. She sold her novel not long after college, did relatively well, and then fell off a cliff into obscurity. Now, without a book contract, she’s back at her family restaurant in a one-stoplight town...and she’s convinced things couldn’t possibly get worse.

That feeling only lasts until her first shift, when on a trip to the storage building behind the restaurant, she literally trips over a body.

Roy Axe, Shadow Hills most hated “Axehole”, died a hard death only feet from the restaurant (and the second-floor apartment Stormy currently resides in). The detective on the case is none other than Hunter Ryan, Stormy’s high school boyfriend, and the man who occasionally still calls to her in dreams. Hunter only cares about solving a mystery - nothing else - so their reunion is tense.

In an attempt to distract herself from what’s happening, Stormy and her cousin Alice get drunk one night and pull out their great-grandmother’s old Ouija board, and it sets off a strange string of events, most of which seem magical...if you believe in that sort of thing, and Stormy isn’t sure she does.

Stormy has trouble deciding which problem to focus on, so she avoids them all until things start blowing up in her face.

Shadow Hills is a small town but the secrets that plague it run deep. Stormy is a woman - or maybe a witch - lost in a sea of magic and despair...but murder might just lead her out of it. That is if she can survive to solve the case, that is.

Really great new series

I started this series in a mood. I couldn’t really get into my last book so I was worried I wouldn’t like this one even though it’s a new series. It was great! I absolutely loved it! I can’t wait for the second book!

An Entertaining Story

I am going through the series again (5 books so far). It is a lot small town soap opera. Great summer listen. 💜

Plods is too racy a term.

I made it through the book. Decent premise, but it would have been a better book if the author had left out the supernatural and just went with small town romance. I kept trying to figure out why the heck was Stormy snooping around into other people’s business. She isn’t a detective…oh! That’s right she’s from a small town, which gives her every right to intrude on people’s lives and make judgments about their actions and lives even though she hasn’t seen them in 10 years.

I was looking a a witchy mystery. This really wasn't it. The performance was good and I was able to get to the end.

Magic yet everyday life.

I don't read many books on magic but this one was mostly everyday life , a romance yearning, and some magic. It was an easy read that showed what life can be like in a small town. The only issue was with the way the romantic- want- to- be kept themselves from the romance. Somewhat typical but not too bad. All in all a feel good book.

What a Hoot

I almost stopped listening when the topic of politics came up, so glad I didn’t.

I haven’t laughed so much during one book since I don’t know when. Love Stormy, Sebastian, Grandpa, and Hunter.

Narration good, hope this series continues

Unexpected delight

I thought this was going to be a run of the mill witchy cozy (which is what I wanted), but it was more complex, character driven, the story was unexpected, the supernatural aspect of the storyline was unconventional - everything was different from the tried and true (and loved by me) standard layout for these types of books. It was different, and I probably would r have read it if I k eq how different, but I read it, I LOVED it, I highly recommend it, and I’m just about to tuck into the next book in the series - here’s hoping the next book is half as good!
