Publisher's summary

Bloodwraith thought of himself as an effective villain, until a single adventurer destroyed his entire lair. With his last breath, he switched bodies with the adventurer and discovered that his world was built on lies. Alien beings from another dimension were using his world as a game...and now, he was one of them.

The problem is, Bloodwraith has no experience being an adventurer. He was a mage, but his new body is only good at hitting things. He relied on undead minions, but now, he has no choice but to depend on other people. And worst of all, strange boxes are constantly appearing in his vision, describing the world in unfamiliar, nonsensical terms.

Taking over the world is off the table because the alien gods might be watching. To survive, Bloodwraith will need to learn the truth about himself and his world. That means acting like an adventurer, at least for now.

Superbly entertaining, witty humor.

So this book and it’s sequels (which as of this review are available on Kindle but not yet in audiobook) are a funny, subversive, witty take on the LitRPG genre.

If “The Land,” “The Ten Realms,” or “Cradle” are the Disney classics of LitRPG, this series is the Shrek. It lampoons the conventions but in a playful and fun way while also embracing those conventions by holding them up to a funny and critical mirror. Ms Lin freshens up the LitRPG style.

The series is engrossing and easy but very fun reading. Thoroughly enjoyable. This author has a natural and engaging writing style.

Audiobook is my preferred consumption style and it says something that I immediately bought books 2 and 3 on kindle after finishing the first book. Congrats to Ms Lin for writing such an entertaining series. I will be checking out your other work and keeping my eye out for future writings.

I would write more but these infernal boxes keep popping up!

Superb and clever

Witty and humorous at all the right times, serious at all the right times, and just a fantastically fun story.

Couldn't put it down

I don't normally like awful protagonists. And Bloodwraith, once second in command to the dearly departed dark lord, is a bad person. Or was. Now he's stuck in the body of heroic barbarian and he's feeling something that he would shudder to hear called empathy or a conscience.

There's a great deal of humour in Bloodwraith's situation. It's an awful lot of fun seeing him struggle both with unfamiliar RPG mechanics and being a hero alike. He has two companions - a kind and ever cheerful dwarf fighter, and a glitched tutorial level NPC - who are fantastic characters in their own right. And Bloodwraith slowly grew on me as he slowly grows from a two-dimensional moustache-twirling villain into a genuine, feeling human being.

I marathoned this novel - I honestly couldn't stop listening, curious what new circumstances, dangerous or hilarious or both, that Sarah Lin would throw Bloodwraith into. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

Bryan G. Lamb does a great job of the narration, which is both clear and well-acted. Though, as this is a self-published work, it was not recorded in a professional sound studio, and so there are sometimes (faint) background noises and other mostly minor issues.

I NEED the rest of the series

I really liked street cultivation but this is on another level! I am normally disinclined to video game mechanics but despite first appearances it has a lot more depth and mystery. Plus the main character raging against the system was right up my alley.

Loved the main party dynamics and the romance is tastefully done.

Please get the rest on audible, I desperately want to give you my credits!

nice spin on the little story

this was a really nice sin on the litrpg formula which was well written and entertaining. A good story no complaints anywhere.

Wow - surprisingly good.

Fantastic from beginning to end. Give it a chance, as it's not at all what you expect out of a book from this genre.

good story overall

I enjoyed the story, and the unusual premise delivers. The characters personalities are suprisingly well fleshed out. The only issue i had was with thr narrators take on the voice of Dania. It was dissapointing for me to hear even a seductive statement given in an airy matter of fact tone. Bloodwraiths voice was great though is its a trade off.

Action and Humor

An enjoyable listen. I was amused with the dialogue and relationships between the 3 main characters. I hope there's a sequel.
