Publisher's summary

Said to be the world's longest poem, Mahabharata was originally composed in 100,000 Sanskrit verses by the ancient Indian sage Vyasa. Revered as a sacred text within Hinduism, it contains the great spiritual teaching Bhagavad-gita. Krishna Dharma has condensed the epic into a fast paced novel that fully retains the majestic mood of the original. A powerful and moving tale, it recounts the history of the five heroic Pandava brothers, sons of the Emperor Pandu. Cheated of their kingdom and sent into exile by their envious cousins, they set off on a fascinating journey during which we meet gods, sages, mystics and mighty warrior kings. Profound spiritual themes underlie the thrilling narrative, making it one of the world's most revered texts. Culminating in an apocalyptic war, Mahabharata is a masterpiece of suspense, intrigue, and illuminating wisdom.

A transcendent experience

I couldn't stop listening. the calm, soothing voice of the narrator suited the transcendental story . this was an amazing experience for me,hearing the story of Krishna and Arjuna, whom I am named after, and the other pandavas. a window into a time far superior to our own, where true virtue lived, and how our current age of Kali began. this is the best English translation of the Mahabharata, respectful and mindful of Lord Krishna as the supreme person, the true God. i recommend this to anyone.

Providing all the context

The context? The Bhagavad Gita. Surely, the lesson of the BG is clear, but the SETTING, the background, the "scenery" is important as well. It brings it more ...down to earth.

Worst...narrator...ever

This is the greatest of all stories I have heard. What I did not want to hear were the CONSTANT lip licking, page rustling, water swallowing, mispronouncing, and general unprofessionalism of the recording. It is if a random person recorded this in their basement, after a large dinner. Amateurish.

Not a fan of the narration

It is a difficult task to read this entire text out, but the magic of editing can remove the long gaps, deep
sighing and constant swallowing/gulping . It’s not at all palatable and almost ruins an otherwise very pleasant listening experience.

The narrator is all but unbearable to listen to...

The story is epic! The narrator is the absolute worst! From the mouth noises to the mispronounciations and tripping over words... just terrible.

Sibling Rivalry

Here meet the heros of the Bhagavad Gita and learn what was behind the huge fratricidal war fought therein. Two groups of half brothers, one devious and one virtuous are constantly at odds and so an 18 day battle is the eventual result. woven throughout are philosophies on life. Much Beauty is described throughout. Many fantastical feats are preformed. We get to learn a lot about Lord Krishna. He rocks. The narrator is fine, he's not as bad as some reviewers have said.

A great classic epic

The reading was a monumental task, and as such I feel the need to forgive the occasional word that sounded a little off to my American ears, because of dialect or the listening speed, or unfamiliarity (mine or his).

Those who have read The Iliad will recognize some parallels, gods and men, virtue and treachery, war and forgiveness.

The story takes on a robust fable way of storytelling, like archers sending unending streams of arrows.
No characters are perfect, and none are without sympathy.
As someone with little knowledge of Indian literature, I felt it was a good introduction.

Best translation!

So many books I buy are translations and the narrators are very difficult to understand. This was a welcome treat. it was easy to listen to, relaxed tone, & the story is a classic
