Publisher's summary

In Wishful Drinking, Carrie Fisher tells the true and intoxicating story of her life with inimitable wit. Born to celebrity parents, she was picked to play a princess in a little movie called Star Wars when only 19 years old. "But it isn't all sweetness and light sabers."

Alas, aside from a demanding career and her role as a single mother (not to mention the hyperspace hairdo), Carrie also spends her free time battling addiction, weathering the wild ride of manic depression and lounging around various mental institutions. It's an incredible tale - from having Elizabeth Taylor as a stepmother, to marrying (and divorcing) Paul Simon, from having the father of her daughter leave her for a man, to ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed.

Love that carrie reads this one

I will never look at Princess Leia the same again. I love her open heart approach to sharing the real parts of her life that aren't so bright and shiney and well as those that are.

Carrie Fisher is more than 'Princess Leia'.

Any additional comments?

I really didn't know anything about Carrie Fisher other than 'Princess Leia', so I was surprised by her dry wit, honesty, and ability to laugh at herself and her whole (mostly pathetically sad) life. This has definitely made me want to seek out more of her books. I found myself laughing out loud throughout. A jewel of a book. Well worth the listen.

Listening to this makes me miss her even more.

As a person with bipolar disorder, I loved the way Carrie lived with the disease with honesty and humor. This audio is a testament to what a wonderful soul we lost.

Hilarious

This was one of the funniest books I’ve ever “read”. The birth announcement was hilarious!

Short easy read/listen, but upbeat and hopeful.

While she discusses life's hardships, and her personal demons, Carrie Fisher does it in a balanced yet upbeat and often funny way. She looks at her upbringing and her home life through a realistic lens. She doesn't blame her parents for her problems, however she acknowledges that her unique upbringing as a child of a movie star and of an alcoholic she was predisposed to some of these issues. I found the most heartwarming parts of the book where when she was talking about her mother and her daughter and her brother with such loving words. That, as well as her message of hope for those who are battling mental illness made this book a very feel-good read.

She was truly crazy

This book illustrates a life of insanity from beginning to end. It is very much worth the read.

Carrie was an American Treasure

This book is a wonderful insight to a multifaceted woman. So sad to live in a world without Carrie, but so grateful her spirit lies on.
