Publisher's Summary

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from 40 years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history.

But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves

Brilliant!!!!!

This is the first of Stieg Larsson's trilogy. It is a fantastic story and brilliantly narrated by Saul Reichlin. It took a few hours for me to really get into it but after this I was totally hooked and couldn't wait to listne to the next part. I've only just finished it and I've already downloaded the sequel......I'm hooked!

Superb murder plot

Written by the sadly deceased Stieg Larsson who never got to see his books in print, the manuscripts being found only after his heart attack.
I wont repeat other reviews but wish to compliment the narrator Saul Reichlin for his excellent character interpretation. The listener is drawn with the feelings and moods of the protagonists during this superb murder mystery. Read this and you will certainly read Stieg Larsson's other titles.

Not usually my cup of tea...

...because I don't usually listen to/read thriller or mystery or crime fiction; and also there has been so much hype, it put me off! However, I was wrong, the hype was right, this was a slow-burn addictive listen. I listen to audio books while I work - I am an artisan crafter - and as this one revved up to the end, I found I was working more, so I could listen and also faster because it was so gripping.

The sexual, violent and disturbing content isn't that bad as it's in context. I gradually learned the characters names and the voices the narrator used were helpful. The narrator is an important factor in any listen. I liked his spare understated style, very appropriate both for the nerdy lists that Larsson uses so much and also for the often upsetting content - his voice made it seem part of the whole and not gratutious.

Good book and well narrated

I had heard about this book for a while, I'm glad I had the opportunity to listen to it on audible, it was a well written book and well narrated. The story line was gripping to the end however, violent in some spots. After I had listened to it, I bought the sequels and the DVD's. I had no reason to deduct any stars and therefore I have given it the highest rating. If you enjoy a good suspense thriller I recommend.

Real good book

The previous reviews have said all that I would have said, except the bit about being a slow start. I found it captured my attention from the beginning. You can't help but love Lisbet.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

An exhilarating, fascinating read and one which I couldn't wait to get back to every day. I would thoroughly recommend the Millenium Trilogy. I've always had this idealised view about Swedish society and in a way it was refreshing to discover that there are as many dark and demonic corners hiding there as in any other country. The best revelation for me though was the unexpected and unlikely anti heroine Lisbeth Salander and her fight against men's propensity to feel and enact violence towards women. Some of the statistics on violence voiced in the Millenium Trilogy against women were shocking but not surprising given the almost daily news we are fed of such atrocities. I felt this book and the others addressed some of the exasperation most of us feel when faced with such awful knowledge and the overwhelming sense of satisfaction when it was attacked head on was so deliciously addictive.

Well paced gripping story

I am not a big lover of fiction, and many have already reviewed this book, so I will just say that the story generally moves along nicely and has some nice twists, whille it is extremely well read. I found this very entertaining and am more than happy to start on the next in the series, which is a pretty big thumbs up from someone who rarely listens to fiction at all.

Absolutely gripping!

When you start reading this book, you will not be able to put it done....and then you will have to purchase the other 2 books in the series! Then you will have to watch the films.........one of the best trilogies I have ever read.
