Story
There is absolutely no logical reason why I am here. The life trajectory my nationality and class and circumstances portended for me was not even remotely close to the one I now navigate. But logic is a science and living is an art. The release I felt in writing my first memoir, Not My Father’s Son, was matched only by how my speaking out empowered so many to engage with their own trauma. I was reminded of the power of my words and the absolute duty of authenticity.

Story
In 1986, Paul Newman and his closest friend, screenwriter Stewart Stern, began an extraordinary project. Stuart was to compile an oral history, to have Newman’s family and friends and those who worked closely with him, talk about the actor’s life. And then Newman would work with Stewart and give his side of the story. The only stipulation was that anyone who spoke on the record had to be completely honest. The result is The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man—revelatory and introspective, personal and analytical, loving and tender in places, always complex and profound.

Brandi Carlile was born into a musically gifted, impoverished family on the outskirts of Seattle and grew up in a constant state of change, moving from house to house, trailer to trailer, 14 times in as many years. Though imperfect in every way, her dysfunctional childhood was as beautiful as it was strange, and as nurturing as it was difficult. At the age of five, Brandi contracted bacterial meningitis, which almost took her life, leaving an indelible mark on her formative years and altering her journey into young adulthood.

Story
It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams - that contributed to the person I am today. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side.

Elvis Duran’s nationally syndicated radio program, Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, is America’s most listened-to Top 40 morning show and one of the 10 most listened-to programs in all of radio, heard live by nearly 10 million people every morning. But his success didn’t happen overnight. Elvis spent years navigating the wild world of radio as a DJ for hire, working (and partying) in markets around the country before taking over the morning shift at the legendary Z100 in 1996. Over the last 20 years, he has become one of New York City’s signature voices.

Our favorite moments from Legal Immigrant
"It is everything I thought it would be: smart, hilarious,
thought-provoking, insightful and hopeful."
–Yael E., Audible Listener
Come one, come all
There are few greater showmen around than Alan Cumming. He can act, sing, and dance, and let’s not forget his razor-sharp wit. And he’s never afraid to share his opinion, as he does in Legal Immigrant, exploring how his life as a Scotland-born naturalized American citizen has impacted him and shaped his views on current immigration policies. His politics are clear and so is his talent. Cumming performed and recorded the show at the Minetta Lane Theatre, eliciting laughter and poignant moments of connection, while interspersing his story with an eclectic selection of songs that lend to the theme and mood. It felt like I spent a couple of wonderful hours at a fabulous cabaret show that you now also get to experience.
About the Creator and Performer
Alan Cumming has performed with Jay-Z and Liza with a Z; he has won a Tony, hosted the Tonys, and been nominated for an Emmy for doing so. He has a soap called Cumming in a Bar, and a bar called Club Cumming. He made back-to-back films with Stanley Kubrick and the Spice Girls. He has played God, the Devil, Hitler, the Pope, a teleporting superhero, Hamlet, all the parts in Macbeth, General Batista of Cuba, a goat opposite Sean Connery, Dionysus, a Smurf (twice) the EmCee in Cabaret (thrice), a James Bond baddie—oh, and political spinmeister Eli Gold on seven seasons of The Good Wife for which he received multiple Golden Globe, Emmy, and SAG award nominations. He is the author of five books including a #1 New York Times best-selling memoir. He plays the first ever gay leading role on an US network drama, CBS’s Instinct. He appeared on Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, topless in Playgirl, and naked on the cover of his second album.
He has received over 40 awards for his humanitarianism and social activism, three honorary doctorates, both the Great Scot and Icon of Scotland awards from his homeland, and was made an OBE (Officer of the British Empire) for his contributions to the arts and LBGTQIA+ equality by the Queen, whose portrait was taken down when his was unveiled at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in 2014.
He has sung in concert halls across the globe including the Sydney Opera House, the London Palladium, the Hollywood Bowl, and Carnegie Hall, and Billboard said of his last concert tour Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs, "he's an icon to behold—he is unapologetically himself, and with a talent like that, he has no need to apologize."
No travel, no lines, no pricey tickets. Just the drama.

And she certainly never knew that her medical school earned the nickname Dead Med thanks to the tragic history of students overdosing on illegal drugs. The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

But when he begins to feel the urge to become a father, and the pressure from his boyfriend to settle down, Tommy starts to wonder if his chosen lifestyle can ever make him happy. And So We Walked is a frank, heartwarming, and inspiring story about a contemporary Cherokee woman and her father who embark on an incredible 900-mile journey along the Trail of Tears to truly understand her own identity and the conflicts of her nation. The play recounts the six-week journey, which retraced the path her great-great-grandparents took in the 1830s during the forced relocation of 17,000 Cherokee from their homelands.

Story
The American story is a story of progress. We’re taught that as time moves forward–and movements for civil rights come and go–America gets better, and better, and better. But the story isn’t that straightforward. Because often, on the heels of what looks like progress, comes backlash. People in power find ways to return things to the way they were before. These moments prove that progress isn’t linear or inevitable. Our standard narratives about American progress aren’t quite true. Backlash offers a new narrative.

Deep thoughts in a cheeky performance
If you're a conservative Trump fan, you might want to pass on this one. I'm not so I really enjoyed it.
In my own home I've had arguments with my mother who, though a Democrat, sees immigrants as threats. Not all immigrants, mostly the little brown people coming over the Mexican border. Her argument is that our ancestors assimilated. My argument is that it's hard for people with dark tans to assimilate with people descended from white European immigrants. Also not included in her argument is that during WWII, many German-Americans assimilated in self-defense, not wanting to be compared to the German NAZIs we were fighting.
But, I digress. If you love Alan Cumming's charming, irreverent sense of humor and don't mind the music as some reviewers seem to, you'll love this Audible offering. I know I do. It's a good reminder that if one is not Native American, one is descended from immigrants. Alan also recognizes those whose ancestors were most likely brought here against their will -- not an immigration choice, Kanye.

Both funny and touching
Through humor the comic tells us the story of being an immigrant. Although most of it is comedy, a lot of it is filled with sadness and how hard it is to come to this country legally or illegally. He hides behind humor at times willing really resonates with me. It’s definitely worth a listen. The singing is stupendous as well.
