Story
The trauma and grief of growing up in an alcoholic or addicted family create a lifetime of baggage. If you grew up in an addicted family, the dysfunction that permeated every aspect of your childhood may have seemed "normal", and you may not even realize the level of affect alcohol still has on your adult life - whether or not you drink. If you are one of the millions of Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOAs), the cost of your childhood pain can be unbearable. You may have learned how to "survive", but are you "living" your life?

Alcoholism, drug abuse, and similar destructive practices can render families dysfunctional. When the children of these families become adults, they sometimes develop self-defeating survival tactics, such as low self-esteem or an obsession with controlling another person's behavior. To help those stuck in codependent cycles identify and eliminate such troubling issues from their relationships, Beattie shares wisdom gained from years of experience.

Excellent content, horrible voice
What did you like best about Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional Families? What did you like least?
The content is so right on, but the woman's voice that reads it is so annoying its very difficult for me to even listen to. Some people have good auditory ranges but this woman sounds irritating to listen to. I have listened to dozens and dozens of books thru audible, most have very good speakers, this one is such a shame as the content is so good it was not bearable to listen to. I had to actually read the book myself.

Terrible choice of voice for this fabulous book!
The book is really good and one of the kind in regards to knowledge about Adult Children and how to heal from dysfunctional cooping skills, it gives hope to all grown up children in this world.
However the voice reading the content in this book is horrible, computerized, reading it with out any what so ever emotional connection with the content. I can't listen to it even though I really want to. And I'll go back to reading the actual book. Because how it's read out here is unbearable to my heart, and soul.
The chapters used has nothing to do with the actual book.
so when I look for chapter 8 from the physical book, which is about becoming our own loving parent, it's impossible to fint it.....

1 In 5 Americans Of US Are ACOA's Here's Help
Knowing is power. This book has helped me understand and help myself and best of all find help at ACOA Meetings. Life is going to get better because I'm working at it and I'm not alone and I'm in good company. Before I found this book, I was numb and feelings were confusing. I'm not an alcholic but I grew up with them all around me.
This book is a one stop shop it's got everything but it's better with friends.

What did you love best about Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional Families?
This book explains exactly what is wrong with us, what is right with us and a little about how to fix it. If things aren't right and people don't treat you well, you will learn WHY!. You will learn what character traits your brain used as a child to help you survive the abuse in your home. Fantastic book, repetitive so the ideas can sink in.

Very Helpful
What made the experience of listening to Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional Families the most enjoyable?
I really loved that an audiobook version of this book was available. It is a really long book and it's hard for me to find the time to read. I can listen while I am at work and that's what works for me.
What did you like best about this story?
It was really great at helping me understand why I am the way that I am.
What about Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional Families’s performance did you like?
The book was done well with no long pauses or errors.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would have liked to but it is way to long to do that.
Any additional comments?
I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the topic

Driving me to drink
What disappointed you about Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional Families?
The delivery of the material was wooden and sounded like there were breaks in words, like a teleprompter broke up a one syllable word so the reader makes it a two syllable word. Awkward pacing. Just awful.
What was most disappointing about Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional Families’s story?
I expected more than a constant droning of the 12 steps, needing to find your higher power. It was like a 21 hour commercial for their program.
What didn’t you like about Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional Families’s performance?
Their voices were just irritating. No emotion in the words and no fluidity. Did they just get volunteers for this? Seriously, for the price I paid for this you could've had someone who can read with some emotional investment to the words.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional Families?
The footnotes. The beginning of the book reading each page that have just numbers on them or some ridiculous work book.
Any additional comments?
If you were looking for insightful about Adult Children of Alcoholics, find another resource. I don't even drink and listening to this book makes me want to.
