Story
Ryan and Kim Smith struggled with dysfunctional eating throughout their lives. They had been on the hamster wheel of diets long before they met. From 2003, they ate their way through a decade plagued by massive weight gain until 2014, at which point they topped out at well over 500 pounds combined. First, Ryan began a weight-loss effort, then Kim followed suit, eventually leading them both to intermittent fasting. The journey transformed not only their relationship with food but with themselves and with each other.

Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease - a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this paradigm-shifting book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, he explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease.

Is it possible to eat well, drink wine, and still lose weight? Melanie Avalon is living proof that it's not only possible, it's unbelievably simple and straightforward. It's all about the what (mostly paleo, but she's not a monster about it), the when (believe it or not, brief fasting can mean freedom rather than restriction), and the wine (red wine can be a secret bullet for weight loss - who knew?). It's a combination that Avalon discovered after years of self-experimentation and intense research on the mechanics of body fat regulation.

Boring narrator
The content of the book is brilliant, but it would be much better if you record it again with a professional narrator, or someone who keeps it entertaining, like Gin Stephens, author of Delay Don’t Deny. I almost fell asleep while driving and listening to this audiobook, literally.

Trying to get this information in my head, but...
Trying to understand this content but the narrator is a pretty strong deterrent. Sometimes, she sounds so disinterested in what she is reading, I'm afraid she is going to fall asleep. I can endure the sound quality- sounds like she is talking into a phone, but it sounds like the narrator isn't even trying to sound interesting.
I wish Dr. Herring would have this book redone with a new narrator.

Ok for basic info
I was not impressed with this. If you are doing or interested in IF, it’s some basic info, but it’s one of those books that is really not more than a few pages of good info stretched out by lots of nothing (use a smaller plate so you aren’t tempted to pile on as much food). The TOC lists a bunch of tools, but they didn’t seem that practical. Just informative-ish. Narration was tedious.

Not great.
I have seen Bert and Judi Herring on many YouTube videos and she is much more animated than she was during her flat narration of this book. I wanted more information and science on how we can/do reset our appetites and was quite disappointed. However, from my personal experience following a plan such as his Fast 5 Diet/Lifestyle can totally normalize one's response to food so thumbs up for the Herrings but I cannot recommend this particular book.

Awful
You could summarise this book in one sentence: only eat for a 5 hour window in 24. Utterly awful with banal, basic advice and nothing of merit at all. It sounds like Bert’s previous work was “fast 19 hours a day” and hr needed some more cash so came up with a new idea called “only eat for 5 hours a day”. Jury’s reading of the book is wooden at best which is the final nail in the coffin of the biggest howler I’ve ever downloaded on Audible.

Hard going
Although I understand that the narrator was probably trying to be clear and consistent I found her really hard to listen to. Initially I was actually convinced that it was a computer generated voice. There were a few moments where she became more animated and it was a joy! Due to the narration I found the book really hard going and I’m not sure that I was able to get much out of it. I will re listen to some key chapters to try and get a proper grasp...but not today!
