Made me laugh, made me cry and made me cringe
This might be my favorite of the DCI Logan series. JD Kirk has the ability to weave unexpected humor into his books in an honest and real way. The storylines are always intriguing and he provides just enough of the characters lives and back story to make you care about them without over shadowing the crime(s) taking place. A Whisper of Sorrows made me laugh out loud, cry and cringe. The narrator, Angus King, delivers Logan exactly how I imagine he would be and brings the rest of the team to life seamlessly. I thought it was great! I hope the rest of the series is coming to Audible soon.

Nobody in the world talks like that
I am a big fan of this author. Love his many books and his many pen names. But I think half of the words in this book are the F-Bomb. It ruins the story and makes it almost impossible to listen to. The previous book was the same way and I just don’t understand why. It feels like a crutch being used for an inability to come up with a more unique boss cop character. Dialogue is hard for sure but frankly it feels like he didn’t even try.

I'm not recalling a detective story with quite this involved a bad guy's revenge. As the ending approached the author's mastery of intricacy popped right up! Wow! An excellent book. And, Audible has more in this series. And each can stand alone. You will meet the same mesmerizing narrator in each. And I just looked up Zertex Publishing - it is based in the Highlands and it's new. Good grief. What more can a mystery fan want as winter rolls in?

Overkill...actual friggin’ overkill.
If it weren’t for the narrator, I’d have quit half way in. Story is basically kill some people violently. Then, kidnap kids. Cue more violence. Kill more people. Cue violence. Rip some of them to pieces. Cue violence. Torture anyone left alive. Add some gratuitous violence. Toss is some more violence. Then, even more violence. Add in soul crushing violence. Add a violent sexual assault. Then, add an extra side of violence with another dose of violence. See how annoying it is to read ‘violence’ over and over? That’s this story. Kirk jumped the shark in this one. At some point, he should have said “yeah that’s enough violence” and “that’s enough” should have been a third of the way into the story.

Way Too Much Use Of The F Word!
This is the first time I have read anything by this author. I love Scottish accents and there was high praise for that. Some other reviewer said that there was too much f word. I thought I could deal with that as I have listened to other books who use swearing in their characters. This was a good story, very well read but, unfortunately, I got sick and tired of the persistent use of the f word by one character. He is Logan’s boss and every other word he uses (I kid you not) is f. I found it to be invasive and irritating. Okay, I know there are people out there who do communicate like this, but really! I will not listen to any more of this series because, as I have stated, the character is a main one and will therefore persist in all stories. I was actually enjoying the story very much but am not willing to stay the course for the potentially hundreds of times the f word is used. So tiresome. I exchanged it!

DCI Jack Logan is, if a bit of a renegade, a likeable character. There is a number of laugh out loud moments, a few sniggers as well as a lot of cursing. I have thoroughly enjoyed this whole series probably because of the relationships and characters involved.

Compelling...but gruelling!
Absolutely enthralling. One of those “rabbit in the headlights” stories - you’re afraid of what will come next, but you have to keep listening. Fantastic characterisation (again). Angus King excels himself in the dramatisation. I’ve never been so fearful for characters; in fact, I’ve never been fearful for characters, but Kirk writes them in such a way that they moved beyond that. I’m off to download the next one!

Brilliant, but!
Another great book, good storyline, exciting and funny. The characters are now so familiar and continue to develop. For me the final chapter and epilogue were unrealistic and too far fetched I have never been in the police service but am pretty sure that’s not how it works. Other than that I couldn’t fault it and am now listening to the next in the series.

Good story but a bit more gory than the last!
I love this series and Angus King is sensational as usual narrating. The regular characters feel like people you know and Jack is as flawed and real as always. The vileness of the crimes in this one are not for the feint hearted but still the thread of humour runs thick throughout as usual. JD Kirk Weaves a tangled tail that surprises just when you think you’re in track. Very entertaining. These books make me homesick for Scotland in spite of the horrors and I can’t wait for the next one!

An anomaly
Love this series of books, one of my favourites, but this book was just too traumatic, I barely finished it by fast forwarding through the violent scenes at the end. It was too long and the voice of the The Whisperer was just unbearable for me to listen to. If you are a fan of the series you might want to stick with it to the end like I did but even though some important events happened in the story line, you could still safely skip it and go to the next book, which is true to form, entertaining and well written.

Bloody brilliant
Hardcore in parts, managed with such finesse, lightened by the right humour just when it is needed. Highly recommend as one of the most refreshing crime series on audible. So glad it keeps going from here! They just get better and better. Author and narrator are as legendary a team as the characters. Thank you!

Stolen money and time
I know this will not be shown on your reviews, like the author you are here for the money. I read half the book and am disgusted that this was printed. It is not close to believable. Never again will I read this novice.

Not a bedtime listen!!
This was scary. Mr Whisper was not a nice man! I could feel myself tensing up at times waiting for the inevitable. The trauma and torture the team was put through was not pretty and it’s little wonder that it took them a long time to recover afterwards. I should have realised as soon as I saw the book cover....

Fast paced and nail biting
This is the best of JD Kirk’s Logan series. He dares to take the characters where you think and hope he won’t, making every chapter unpredictable and exciting. The story is complex and smart, the listener can’t help but be invested. What an amazing book, brought to life by a brilliant narrator who manages to depict the unique personalities of the characters by multi layered tones of voice and nuance. Fantastic!
