Aubrey Parsons at his best

Great storyline and an outstanding performance by Aubrey Parsons. If you like action and suspense this is a must read

Sometimes gruesome but I dare you to stop reading!

I agree with several reviewers that the books are pretty graphic and gory but I dare you to quit reading. The plots are gripping and twisted and I did not guess what the final outcome would be. The first book, Pray for the Rays, has a complex and clever plot with the evil that lies within the Ray family. DCI Yorke gets caught in the middle when the murders start and he has to sort out all the potential motives and suspects, since many people dislike the Ray family. I liked the other police characters, although most are not fleshed out too completely. All in all these are good police stories that are compelling, well written and at time gruesome.

Has promise

The stories improved as the books progressed. Narrator read words wrong often. Psychopathic not sycophantic

I have really enjoyed the three box set and looking forward to listening to more of the series

Stop the Killing!

Apparently, the author of this series is an English teacher, but I think he needs to put down Hamlet. In the past few books he has killed off members of the team, or their spouses. For one unfortunate teen, he killed off his mother, his father and even his beloved pet snake. As a mom to a snake loving teen boy, that one was particularly tough. In all seriousness, it’s a detective story, so there will be death involved. Not every story has a happily ever after, but the constant elimination in good guys every book is a real downer and I probably won’t go on with the series because of it.

Terrible!!

I have read many British detective stories(&listened) but this is the worst!! I bought as 3 part set for one credit, so I wanted to not waste money & complete it. The stories were so gruesome & drawn out!! The narration was just sad, could not do women’s parts & could not keep up with who’s who, just terrible!!

Ruined by narrator

Could have been good stories, but the narrator's shouting was unacceptable. Ill try for a refund.

First book ok, just gets more trite as they go on

First book was ok, but as the series progresses, the stories just get more over the top. It’s more dangerous to be a cop/family member of a cop in Salisbury than the most dangerous city in the US. They drop like flies. And many killers don’t get caught just to reappear in later stories to haunt the team. And we’re supposed to be impressed with them?

The author has injured/killed off folks in ways that don’t advance the plot or add to the story, but just serves to make a new person miserable. Or perhaps it’s supposed to “add tension” as are the frequent & trite cell phone issues (characters forget to charge phones (!), no cell service). If it was once or twice it would be ok, but really.

Also, most of the romantic partnerships are stiff.

Narrator was fine. Otherwise wouldn’t recommend.

Nasty, Brutish, and Yorke

Forget about deep-sea welding or high-altitude logging; clearly the most dangerous occupation in the world is being a supporting character in the Yorke series. And if you and your family and/or pets and/or psychological stressors figure in the first chapter or two, get your affairs in order and stand by for an unnecessarily gruesome death. Oh, and if you are a hapless woodland creature crossing the road in the snow, you're finished, whether or not the random musings from the series "hero" about driving classes, departed siblings, aftershave, or cigarettes will make you feel any better about your needless demise (and Book 1 totted up at least three such random acts of vehicular violence with no actual connection to the script or the characters). The real problem is that it's hard not to get attached to the "supporting" characters because Yorke himself is such a factotum. He cries a LOT but he doesn't really have much emotional range. He likes to run, but it doesn't seem to serve him especially well psychologically or professionally. The audio book script expends whole minutes--though they seem like hours--on a lecture on Aztec cosmology, but the most said about Yorke--count the words if you think I'm exaggerating--concerns his nicotine addiction versus any other thing that might make him interesting, let alone compelling. So while the potentially interesting characters are dropping in droves, not to advance the plot so much as to deepen the overall misery of the hing, the "star" of the show plugs on, less interesting with each page. I finished the three books because they came together for one credit, and I hoped the series would find its footing. It didn't. Frankly, I would listen to Aubrey Parsons read the fine print on my water bill, but even he can't resurrect any human interest, let alone humanity, in this mess. So I will go back to real noir, real horror, and real police procedurals. Yorke & Co. fall unreadably somewhere in between.
