Publisher's summary

From the legendary basketball coach who inspired generations of athletes and businesspeople, an inspiring book about the power of mentoring and being mentored.

After eight books, many of them best sellers, A Game Plan for Life is the one closest to John Wooden's heart: a moving and inspirational guide to the power of mentorship. The first half focuses on the people who helped foster the values that carried Wooden through an incredibly successful and famously principled career, including his college coach, his wife, Abraham Lincoln, and Mother Teresa. The second half is built around interviews with some of the many people he mentored over the years, including Kareem Abdul- Jabbar, Bill Walton, fellow coaches, family members, and even a middle school coach in Canada.

Their testimony takes readers inside the lessons Wooden taught to generations of players, bringing out the very best in them not just as athletes but as human beings. In all, its an inspiring primer on how to achieve success without sacrificing principles, and on how to build one of the most productive and rewarding relationships available to any athlete, businessperson, teacher, or parent: that of mentor and protege.

Great Learning

At times it seemed a bit slow but the knowledge attained was great! I didn't know who John Wooden was and selected this book based on a feeling. This was a great man that I'm sure is still a great and positive influence on those who know of him.

Incredible!

I downloaded this at the suggestion of a friend, I wasn't sure about it. I am now. I would suggest this to anyone who is in the position of being a mentor to anyone.

I'm not this kind of guy, but the last chapter made me cry. This is a truly inspirational book.

Amazing- My New Favorite Book

WOW! I had no idea that this book would have such a big impact on me. I had never heard of John Wooden until he was mentioned in a John Maxwell book I was listening to. Maxwell spoke so highly of the man it made me want to find out more.

Overall this book was incredible. I have listened to it twice in the past couple of months and will keep coming back to it without a doubt. The book is separated into two parts; people who mentored John Wooden and then letters from people who were mentored by John Wooden.

The part that stands out to me the most was in the letter from Bill Walton where he told a story about graduating, joining the NBA, and winning the 6th Man Award when he was on the Celtics. He said that Wooden wrote him a letter saying (paraphrased), "Congratulations, you've learned the two most important lessons in life- Be quick but don't hurry, and that failing to prepare is preparing to fail."

Walton said he has that letter framed on his wall and he sees it everyday, but he couldn't tell you what happened to the award. That letter meant more to him than the award, you know? Wouldn't it be incredible to make that kind of an impact on someone's life?

It seems like such a simple note for Wooden to send, but I think it meant so much to Walton because of the man who was writing it.

I also liked hearing about Wooden being mentored by people he's never met like Mother Teresa and Abraham Lincoln. He said he has over 40 books on Lincoln in his library.

I would recommend this book to anyone in a leadership position or who plans on moving into a leadership position in their personal or professional life.

What a man

Where does A Game Plan For Life: The Power of Mentoring rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

John Wooden is such an inspiration. This book got me thinking about the mentors who have helped me. People that I admired but never thought of them in that way. Mr. Wooden really changed my perspective of people around me. He also made me more conscious of my own personal actions, because there might be people looking at me as a mentor. Great book.
