Publisher's Summary

"Your only job is to help your players be better." That single idea had a huge impact on Tony Dungy when he heard it from one of his earliest mentors, and it led him to develop the successful leadership style so admired by players and coaches throughout the NFL. Now, a storied career and a Super Bowl victory later, Tony Dungy is sharing his unique leadership philosophy with you.

In The Mentor Leader, Tony reveals what propelled him to the top of his profession and shows how you can apply the same approach to virtually any area of your life. In the process you'll learn the seven keys of mentoring leadership - and why they're so effective; why mentor leadership brings out the best in people; how a mentor leader recovers from mistakes and handles team discipline; and the secret to getting people to follow you and do their best for you without intimidation tactics. As a son, a football player, and a winning coach, Tony has always learned from others on his path to success. Now you can learn to succeed for your team, family, or organization while living out your values - by becoming a mentor leader.

Anyone in leadership needs this book. I am going to apply the principals of being a mento leader in my team of six in child welfare workers. I know it will change their lives as it has changed mine.

awesome wisdom

This coach is inspiring, challenging, and exciting despite his calm demeanor. A great encouragement to anyone aspiring to be a leader. a great encouragement to anyone who doesn't even recognize they are a leader.

Doing things without expecting praise

This was a great book! I was expecting to hear a bunch of coach stories but I was surprised it went in a different direction. I love all of the emphasis on doing important work without expecting praise. It’s easy to get caught in the trap of strategically doing good deeds to boost your own position and ego. I would recommend it to other coaches and even players in a captain position

Mentoring advertisement, without structure

When the author’s famous name is as large or larger than the title of the book, it’s probably not trading on its good substance or writing. Such is the case here. A lot of God, football and mentor others advertising - but without a good structure. Try “The Good Shepherd” instead - shorter and far better message regarding leading by making deep connections with your target audience (ie, subordinates or employees).
This isn’t a “bad” book - it just isn’t good.
