There is more to power than raw strength, a harsh lesson Sam must learn if he is to overcome threats from one world to the next.
Though Sam's ascension to Paragon has elevated him to new heights, his overconfidence traps him in a trial on a dead world. Separated from his friends, Sam must survive the last Immortal Magus's training to navigate the Proving Grounds littered with mechanical monsters.
The only way home is through.
Sam will need to master a power he has barely begun to comprehend and venture into the Empire's war-torn past to return to a battlefield where new allies and old enemies await. Without his aid, more than just his skyshard will be destroyed by the all-consuming Maelstrom.

If you've read Beastborn then you've already read this book. MC gets seperated from his group, while defending them, right before an important buildup point (reunion with friends). He's stuck in a completely new place, with new characters, solving another massive cataclysm only vaguely related to the main plot. Meanwhile his warrior woman/ awkward budding love interest must handle all the town building and group dynamics in his absence, while worrying but believing he's alive. MC gains a bunch of skills in his absence and will return at the exact moment to turn the tide of the desperate battle against the enemy he's already defeated once. This is the exact plot of 1, arguably 2, Beastborn books. Ugh.
The worlds Callum creates are awesome and his characters are usually quite interesting, especially for this genre. I just wish he'd spend more time exploring what we've already been introduced to rather than expanding to new parts.
I think the Komachis are the only reason I keep buying these. and Luke Daniels lol. I'll probably by the next one too.
Another leveling side quest, yay...

Very good

Better than the last two

Overall, it was a good book, but I think it was trying to achieve too much in total. The book goes through seven different character perspectives and I would only say up to three were relevant to the main story.
Good but not great

Nice return to form.

So many scenes were great specifically with Sam, and too be fair there are a few things I love about this book but the author just doesn't like making sense I guess.
the first two books are about Sam being split up from most of the people he knows and making a safe base for everyone when they finally reunite. well as soon as they are about to have their reunion guess what he gets split up again because he's not paying attention. Now I was mad but he gets lost in a place where time doesn't progress, so I thought okay fine he's going to have some kind of training montage that's not too bad. he goes through trials in the past and the time he spends in the past some how move time in the present forward???? that makes no sense he's either in the past or he isn't.
that would be bad enogh but he split time between Sam and everyone else so all those group we were hearing about that we were waiting to meet are catapulted into the path of the others. it's incredibly abrupt and things just happen because plot.
I loved all the trial stuff with Sam I thought that was done well but the world building took a massive hit and I somehow feel more invested in the new characters introduced in this book then the ones we've had since book 1.
I might buy book 4 but if I do I'll probably wait for it to go on sale or something.
This should have been good!
