“Sometimes monsters are just broken people, hiding their scars from a world that has hurt them.”

Dove Carroway has two lives....

By day, she’s the bubbly, pink-clad media journalist who writes sensational stories about a vigilante serial killer. By night, she becomes the Baby Doll Killer, an avenger with a flair for punishing the worst of humanity—men who prey on children. But her most formidable challenge isn’t a criminal; it’s her insufferably charming work rival.

Wrenley Campbell is the perfect gentleman to everyone but Dove, the one person who grates on his nerves with her sunshine act. But Wrenley’s secrets are darker than the articles they write, and when Dove unburies the truths he’s hiding, she finds herself drawn to him in ways she never expected.

When their battle of wits escalates into something that hits too close to home, Dove steps into his world as her deadly alter ego, intending to terrify him into backing off. As Wrenley pieces together who she really is, their rivalry turns into a fiery connection that neither can deny.

Secrets this dark have a way of coming to light, and soon, they will have to decide whether their love is strong enough to survive the shadows or shatter under the weight of their haunted pasts.

Perfect for fans of dark humor, sizzling tension, and morally gray characters, Dolls & Daggers is a wickedly dark romantic comedy that’ll have you laughing, gasping, and swooning in equal measure.

“Sometimes monsters are just broken people, hiding their scars from a world that has hurt them,”

These two were perfect for each other. I love when the roles are reversed and the FMC is the unhinged unaliver. Both of the main characters had traumatic pasts so they were able to bond over all their feelings and had an understanding when it came to why she did the things she would do to the awful people.
The narrators did a great job with this one. Lucy did a great job on her character voice for the babydoll k!ller.

Love a Feisty FMC!!!

I listened to the audiobook of this book and enjoyed the way the narrators brought the book and characters to light.

I absolutely adored Wrenley and Dove and their experiences within the book. The way Wrenley was infatuated with Dove was wonderful. The way these two interact within the book was fun. I enjoyed the reversal where our FMC is the ser!al killer instead of a male like it happens in most books.

I can’t wait to see what the author comes up with in the next book of the series.

So here for the serial killer book club with Dove & Bunny! This was such a fun one to listen to!! Performed in duet by Lucy Rivers & Aaron Shedlock and I think they both did a wonderful job at bringing this book to life! The banter and tension between Dove & Wren was so good and so fitting for them being rivals! Both of them have been through some past trauma and I do love when they start sharing their vulnerable sides with each other. Check the TW if you need to, but if you want a darker rom com, then I’d definitely recommend! Can’t wait for more of this series!

I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Dolls & Daggers by D.L. Darby is a vigilante romance centered around Dove and Wren. By day, Dove is a reporter who writes about Doll, her alter ego. Wren just joined the team with aspirations of also writing about the Doll, but Dove ain’t having it. This spawns an enemies-to-lovers romance between the two. Their situationship gets even more complicated when Wren suspects Dove and The Doll are one in the same. Think of it as a spicy take on Superman and Clark Kent, but with a female lead.

This brings me to one of my favorite aspects of the story: the reversal of tropes and gender roles. We’ve seen a few books feature female serial killers, but Darby took that concept and expanded it. The female serial killer becomes the female vigilante with an alter ego and is the dominant personality in the book. Wren, our male lead, is our sensitive character and becomes sort of our damsel in distress. This creates a very interesting dynamic that we don’t often see in contemporary romance, and I welcome it wholeheartedly. You could sort of say, Wren is the Lois Lane to Dove’s Superman. I think that’s a fair comparison.

Introducing a concept like this takes some clever writing, and Darby brings it with style. It’s very subtle, but you can see a reversal, and it’s not done in a way that could be considered insulting. Just because Wren is our “damsel,” he isn’t a weak or incompetent character. On the other hand, Dove may be the superhero of the story, but she still feels those emotions, even if she doesn’t want to show them. This leaves room for growth in both characters throughout the novel. Darby also does a great job in balancing the A and B stories. While we do get to see a little of what The Doll does, the story is mainly focused on the relationship between Wren and Dove and how they navigate her vigilantism.

The audiobook is produced by Blue Nose Audio with narration by Lucy Rivers and Aaron Shedlock. Lucy Rivers has narrated numerous books, but she may be most well-known, at least to me, for her role as Sloan in Butcher and Blackbird. Dove is a bubbly character, and Lucy brings her to life perfectly. Her voice really helped me visualize the character as I was listening. Aaron Shedlock did a fantastic job playing the part of Wren. He had this cadence that reminded me of a character from old private eye film noir, like Philip Marlowe or Sam Spade. I believe the only other production I heard with Shedlock was Done and Dusted, and I loved him in that as well.

Holy cow! D.L Darby what an amazing writer!
Fantastic narration. Loved both of them!

I loved this book so much.
Wren and Dove are rivals at work. Wren has an obsession with the baby doll killer. He had just moved back to New York and takes a job writing for Metro media. He’s wanting to get the attention of the baby doll killer. But he had no idea what he’s gotten himself into.

Dove is a 5ft nothing who loves the color pink and has helped bring metro media back to life with her writing about the baby doll killer. She had suffered abuse and had trauma from it.

This was such a fun read. Loved these characters and can’t wait for more in this series!
