A man is thrown from a moving freight train. Tom Mercury is the only person who sees the shove. Tom was supposed to be catching a passenger train out of Graystone, Montana. Instead, he runs. Minutes later he is clinging to the side of a moving locomotive, trying to reach a crew trapped behind a wired-shut door. What he finds inside is worse. The train’s controls have been tampered with. Its route has been changed. The manifest doesn’t match the cargo. And the men issuing the orders have real credentials, real authority—and no intention of letting the freight reach its destination. ...

Vienna, 1972. A Soviet archivist approaches the British Embassy with a page that should not exist. Igor Petrov asks for no money. No asylum. No promises. He leaves junior embassy officer Alice Thompson with a single copied page from a Soviet archive. On it are two British codenames—VOLKOV and NIGHTFALL—and a date that makes their appearance together impossible. London calls it a Soviet fabrication. David Harper, a semi-retired British intelligence officer with reasons of his own to remember the names, is quietly asked to prove them right. Instead, he discovers that page forty-seven of ...

Eleven prisoners vanished in 1956. Britain says it never received them. One man signed the receipt. October 1991. Seventy-seven-year-old Thomas Avery receives an anonymous photograph taken at Akrotiri during the Suez Crisis. It shows an aircraft, men who disappeared from every official register—and Thomas under the name he buried thirty-five years ago. Retired intelligence officer John Rawson is given one simple task: find Thomas and bring him home. But a French photograph, an Egyptian list, and a British receipt describe a crime designed so no single file could prove it. The people ...

Before the police know who planted the bomb, the internet already knows. Minutes after an explosion tears through Manchester Piccadilly, three different attackers are identified online. A migrant. A far-right extremist. A police informant. All three stories are false. And all three were prepared in advance. Former police officer Matthew Wilkins knows something is wrong when a sentence from the attacker's supposed manifesto appears on television. He recognises it because he wrote it fifteen years earlier, while operating Odin47—a covert online identity used to engage vulnerable teenagers ...

A suspected Russian mole. A secret investigation. No evidence it ever existed. London, 1995. MI5 officer Nell Ward receives an American warning too dangerous to file and too vague to trust: somewhere inside MI6, Moscow may have an “old friend.” There is no transcript, no shareable source, and no name—only fragments pointing toward a respected British officer. Adrian Lyle is polished, protected, and an unsettling match. As Nell builds an off-the-books surveillance team, unexplained journeys and missing records begin to form a pattern. But patterns are not proof, and the closer her team...

A courier vanishes. A veteran spy waits. Someone is measuring every choice he makes. Vienna, 1955. East German intelligence officer Eberhard Teschner arrives at a midnight recovery point and finds signs only a professional would notice: an altered panel, an early tram, a signal retired years ago. The meeting has not merely failed. It has been staged. By dawn, Eberhard's fallback rooms have been touched and his private life drawn into the operation. Berlin issues a courteous recall through the mentor who shaped his career. A British officer offers rescue at the price of ownership. And ...

A prisoner van disappears into a whiteout. Tom Mercury follows. On a mountain pass swallowed by snow, Tom sees an unmarked transport escorted by a sheriff's cruiser with its lights off. A dump truck seals the road behind them. Turning back would be sensible. Tom has never been especially interested in sensible. In Black Basin, a missing prisoner has been erased by altered clinic records, edited video, and transfer papers no one will explain. The sheriff wants Tom out. Armed contractors know his room number. And beneath the town, an industrial quarry hides a system that does more than make ...

Seven names. Six dead. One man survived. In December 1994, a covert British operation in Prague collapsed with terrifying precision. Within seventy-two hours, six people connected to Operation BRAMBLE were dead. The seventh name—Marek Wierzbicki—survived. Thirty-two years later, retired intelligence officer Donald Gresham receives a copy of the page he remembers destroying. Across it, someone has written: YOU MISSED ONE. Investigator Timothy Smeaton discovers a casualty report that does not match the dead, a vanished annex, and a Russian warning remembered differently from London. Marek...

A file destroyed in 1989 should not be due for review in 2027. When veteran records officer Deirdre Tovey finds that contradiction inside a sealed British government archive, she stops the file from moving. HAWTHORN/17/6 was officially disposed of decades ago. Yet someone has kept its restrictions alive. Former government lawyer Stewart Durnford understands why: twenty years earlier, he helped draft the careful answer that prevented a family from learning what Britain had asked of Gerard Lumsden, an unofficial fixer in apartheid-era southern Africa. With Parliament demanding an account, ...

The Cold War ended. Its suspicion did not. London, 1996. A CIA officer warns MI5 that a senior figure inside British intelligence may have served Moscow for years. There is no name, no testable source, and no evidence—only the codename HEARTH and clues pointing toward a trusted spy. Counterintelligence officer Nicola Ellison is ordered to create SABLE, a secret cell hidden inside MI5. Its task is to find the mole without alerting MI6. Forty names become travel claims, hotel records, intercepted calls, and cameras inside private homes. But the evidence refuses to behave. Clean finances ...

For eight years, Britain's greatest Cold War source has never been wrong. Then intelligence officer Edgar Sillars discovers one prediction the source could not possibly have made. Brussels, 1979. A courier is intercepted carrying a list of compromised agents—exactly as the source codenamed FALLOW warned. But the list was prepared after his warning. A forgotten operation reveals the same impossible sequence: British surveillance confirmed an enemy tasking issued six hours too late. As Edgar reconstructs eight years of clandestine meetings and policy decisions, he finds that almost every ...

Five men made the mistake of believing no one would stop them. Tom Mercury steps off a failing bus in Hollis Cut and finds five towing-company enforcers surrounding a lone truck driver. Rae Donnelly has said no. They are not listening. Ninety seconds later, the men are down—and the sheriff already knows Tom's name. Barlow Recovery controls sixty miles of highway. The tow trucks. The impound yard. The dispatch calls. Even the official story behind every wreck. Its crews arrive before accidents happen. Vehicles vanish. Drivers disappear from the record. Rae came to Hollis Cut looking for ...

A Soviet pilot steals the West’s most wanted interceptor. Freedom is not waiting at the end of the runway. 1976. Major Vadim Kornev breaks formation, drops beneath Soviet radar and flies a MiG-25 Foxbat across the Sea of Japan with his fuel running out. He lands in the rain with one demand: political asylum. But the aircraft may be worth more than the man who brought it. Moscow demands his return. Tokyo must defend its sovereignty without provoking the Soviet Union. American intelligence wants the Foxbat—and everything Kornev knows. Soon protection begins to resemble custody. Interviews...

She carried one strip of microfilm. By dawn, everyone would want to own her. Johannesburg, late 1980s. Sue Dobson is not a spy. She is a courier—careful, forgettable, and trusted with a transfer schedule naming people the Security Branch intends to erase. Then the surveillance closes in. Captured with evidence hidden against her skin, Sue is offered a choice that is not a choice: cooperate, disappear into a file, or become useful to another intelligence service. Rebuilt under a false identity and moved through the Cold War shadows of Vienna, she learns that protection can be another form ...

The storm has cut the town off. The rescue crews are taking people away. Tom Mercury is only passing through when he sees a young woman being dragged toward an unmarked skiff by men in rescue jackets. He intervenes. Minutes later, the sheriff brands him a violent outsider—and every emergency service in town begins hunting him. Dina Voss's brother vanished from a storm shelter after being sedated and tagged for transfer. His name is not on a missing-person list. It is on a manifest. The relief organisation keeping the town alive controls the shelter, the clinic, and a fortified lighthouse ...

Eleven inspection records. Eleven different shipments. One identical photograph. When junior auditor Ece Acar discovers evidence that cargo has been moving through an international freight corridor without proper inspection, she brings it to Derya Aksoy. Then Ece disappears. The records point toward K-17/West — an obscure cross-border route protected by old permissions, private contractors and officials who have learned that some questions are safer left unanswered. But the deeper Derya looks, the less simple the corruption becomes. The route was not created for criminals. It was built ...

She thought she only filed the secrets. Then someone used her to steal them. Accra, 1983. Evelyn Hart expects a quiet administrative posting at the American embassy: keys, manifests, movement orders, and the paperwork that keeps other people's operations moving. Then a second key is taken off the books. A forged movement order appears with Evelyn's name on it. And in an embassy where every signature and missing page can become a weapon, a routine document turns her into evidence. Outside the compound, Evelyn meets Kojo—charming, observant, and impossible to place. He knows the city's ...

Martin Evers has been dead for nine months. So why has he just sent Alice Thompson a train ticket? The journey leaves Alice with three things: a cassette recorded by a dead intelligence officer, a photograph she does not remember being taken, and a message written on the back: ASK YOUR FATHER WHAT HE SIGNED. David Harper spent his career inside the British intelligence establishment, where difficult decisions were buried beneath careful language and responsibility was divided until nobody quite owned the consequences. Fifteen years ago, at a secret meeting outside Bruges, he put his name to...

Some people never really die. Andrew Bell has been dead for twenty-six years. Then a photograph surfaces showing the British intelligence officer alive—thirteen days after his funeral. The photograph was found beside the remains of Eleni Vardaki, a young Greek woman who disappeared during a covert operation in Athens in 1998. Her family were told she had emigrated. The official files say little more. But one surviving memorandum carries the initials of retired intelligence officer Edward Holling. Hold E. V. until Bell clear. Edward remembers signing it. He also remembers the operation ...

Fifty-three names disappeared from the official record. Derya Aksoy’s may have been one of them. At 6:12 one morning, an unidentified man telephones Derya and tells her that her dead father kept a blue notebook. Hours later, the notebook is in her hands—and powerful men from two countries are trying to take it from her. Its cryptic entries point towards a clandestine network that moved women and children across European borders under temporary identities. Some were being rescued from terrible danger. Others simply vanished inside a system designed to leave no accountable decision-maker ...
