Publisher's summary

Welcome to the Orthodox Church - its history, theology, worship, spirituality, and daily life. This friendly guide provides a comprehensive introduction to Orthodoxy, but with a twist: listeners learn by making a series of visits to a fictitious church, and get to know the faith as new Christians did for most of history, by immersion. Mathews-Green provides commentary and explanations on everything from how to "venerate" an icon, the Orthodox understanding of the atonement, to the Lenten significance of tofu. It's the perfect book for inquirers and newcomers, but even listeners who have been Orthodox all their lives say they learned things they never knew before. Enjoyable, easy-to-listen-to and leavened with humor, Welcome to the Orthodox Church is a gracious guide to the ancient faith of the Christian East.

Very detailed!

It covered a lot of content that I have been curious about! Even the small details were covered.

interesting

I really enjoyed the book. I want to convert and this seems to give a good taste of the life of the church. Her willful bad grammar was jarring and made me wary of a lot of what she said. She would be more effective in her feminist propaganda had she used he/she properly.

A great intro to eastern Christianity

A great look into the Orthodox Church. As I continue to learn about new faiths (or in this case, an Old Faith through the eyes of someone who has never looked at it), Mrs. Mathewes-Green does a great job at explaining the core tenets of Eastern Orthodoxy.

A great resource as a catechumen to the Church.

This book is great to be utilised as a foundation of knowledge of the Orthodox Church.

I wept

I'm a fairly recent inquirer and had heard about Mathewes-Green through my church friends- in fact, she has apparently made an appearance at my parish before. I was really just looking for some educational material to prepare for my cathechism and came across this, mostly expecting some basic theology and liturgical etiquette. This I did find. I was not, however, expecting such gentle, poignant wisdom as to leave me prostrate in front of my icon corner, reciting the Jesus prayer in between sobs. Frederica put things into words which I could never express but which I had always believed. This is a gorgeous work.

Wonderful introduction book

One of the first books I heard as a Catechumin. Using it now with the person I'm helping through Catechumin. Great lay out, good details. Only minor issue is the speaker is very soft spoken so if you're driving it can be hard to hear without cranking the volume up to max. Besides that VERY MINOR issue this is a perfect book.
