Publisher's Summary

In the earliest centuries of faith, Christians in the deserts of Palestine and Africa sought a short prayer that could be easily repeated, in order to acquire the habit of "prayer without ceasing." The result was the Jesus Prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me." This jewel of Eastern Christianity aims at enabling a person to be in God's presence, rather than to focus on feelings or thoughts about God. The first section of The Jesus Prayer offers a concise overview of the history, theology, and spirituality of Orthodoxy, so that the prayer can be understood in its native context. Following that is a conversational question-and-answer format that takes the listener through practical steps for adopting this profound practice in everyday life.

Wonderfully inspiring overview of the Jesus Prayer

There is much about this book that I really love. I plan on listening to it again. There is a lot of insight into the why, context and use of the contemplative Jesus Prayer. I liked the author's easy approach towards unfolding the story and history of this Christian prayer. Though I didn't really agree with her thoughts about the devil, however do understand its context. This book in tone reminds of Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love. The pages are both an insightful and entertaining read, rather to listen to. Highly recommend this book, if you are interested in exploring the Jesus prayer. It is thoughtfully written.

Narrater's voice is a bit too soft.

I find myself straining to hear. The narrator's voice is a bit too soft. That said, the book is providing important information and answers for the seeker. Thank you.

Excellent heartfelt connection to ancient faith

Creating an intellectual and emotional connection to the importance of mercy and that our need for daily mercy never ends.I teach a course based on the Jesus Prayer in a place where men have lost something of the need for a moral compass - through the way in which addiction dulls a person spiritually and makes the respect for moral authority full of anger. I love the way in which Frederica Mathewes-Green ties it together to the benefits that comes from praying the Jesus Prayer consistently

beautiful book will listen over again

A real gem! the reader is the author: humble and deeply spiritual. Deep yet easy to follow; concise yet full of insights, guidance and encouragement. Sprinkled with lots of stories and tips from the saints, as well as contemporary advice for busy lay people. I'm delighted and encouraged by this purchase! Not dumbed down, not overly academic and refreshingly waffle free!
