Publisher's summary

For Protestants or Catholics seeking to understand Eastern Orthodoxy, the Cross is a good place to start. In the West a multitude of different views sprang up over the last millennium, but Orthodox Christian beliefs have remained unchanged. The contrast between those views is suggested by the two images on the book's cover, showing how differently the meaning of the Cross was understood, East and West.

Two Views of the Cross is a short, focused book, ideal for listeners looking to grasp the overall picture (with some passages from Mathewes-Green's more-comprehensive classic, Welcome to the Orthodox Church). This volume adds a new title to Mathewes-Green's long list of helpful books about Eastern Orthodoxy. Looking at the Cross from Western and Eastern perspectives provides a concise introduction to the beautiful, mystical, and sometimes-surprising Orthodox faith.

Another great book

Another great book by Frederica. Getting out of the western mindset regarding salvation is a challenge, doing so is freeing and beautiful. I’m thankful for all I learned from Two Views of the Cross and recommend it to any sincere seeker of Orthodoxy.

Good Comparison, Audio Lacks

Good content and a good comparison between East and West theology. The author’s narration makes it difficult to not fall asleep. She speaks in a very soothing, quiet manner and I kept nodding off.

Insightful Presentation

I found this to be a great presentation on the Eastern Christian approach to soteriology. I found a particular weakness in often lumping Catholics & Protestants together to make points about “Western” Christianity. Most, if not all of what is described here can be reconciled with Catholicism (even if it isn’t an emphasis of the Roman Church). The same can’t be said of Protestantism. I think this book gives a very accessible presentation overall.

Beautifully arranged work to compare and outline orthodox theology of the cross as well as the entire economy of Christ for our salvation and ultimate unity with Him.

Clarity for Christians

The First Lady of American Orthodoxy once again takes us on a gentle but invigorating walk through the beauty and peace that is Orthodox life. She clearly and lovingly lays out the stark differences between Western views of the Cross and Salvation, which disconnected from the rich Eastern views of the same and along the way shows us all how much more vibrant and fulfilling those Orthodox views are.
