Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred. It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night.

My husband is a doctor. He’s smart and charming, and everybody trusts him. Except me. On the surface, it looks like I have it all–the perfect marriage, the perfect husband, the perfect life. But it’s far from the truth. Doctor Drew Devlin is not the respectable figure he makes out to be. It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Not my favorite by the author
I felt like I spent the first 1/3 of the book trying to keep straight in my mind all the characters and all their multiple time lines. It came together in the end though and made sense while it was all over. Good book, I feel like everything I’ve read of his is good.

Decent
So much going on- and what a web we weave as humans!! FYI to the narrator, Southerners don’t say AGAIN like (A-Gay-ne), we say it like (A-Gin). I’m from Alabama and NO ONE here talks like that. That’s from the old South, from around 100 years ago.

Slow build up
I had a difficult time keeping track of what was going on in the early parts of the story. It took my ADHD a while to understand the flashbacks in many of chapters were flashing back from the current chapter storylines and not one solitary timeliness. Once I was able to grasp that, I thoroughly enjoyed it as I have all past John Marrs' audiobooks.

Fantastic Book
I loved this book from the brilliant story teller, John Marrs, and narrated beautifully by Peter Noble. I think Marrs' unique books are amongst the best of his generation, if you're into interesting characters, imaginative plots with plenty of unexpected twists and turns, then you must read or listen to this book; one of the best.

Amazing book!! My favorite John Marrs!
Wow, just wow. I thought The Passengers was my favorite John Marrs - Author book but this one blew me away. In the beginning there are many characters to keep track of, but that just means there’s a ton of twist and turns that will blow you away. Starts out slow. Keep with it. You won’t regret it!
