Publisher's Summary

A “superior thriller” (Oakland Press) about a man, a dog, and a terrifying threat that could only have come from the imagination of #1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz - nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

On his thirty-sixth birthday, Travis Cornell hikes into the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains. But his path is soon blocked by a bedraggled Golden Retriever who will let him go no further into the dark woods.

That morning, Travis had been desperate to find some happiness in his lonely, seemingly cursed life. What he finds is a dog of alarming intelligence that soon leads him into a relentless storm of mankind’s darkest creation...

Everybody says this is great

It's good. But I disagree, it is not great, it is very good. It's an easy listen, the narrator does well, good inflection, not many mispronunciations (my pet hate). The story itself is a little mundane in my humble opinion, not one of Koontz's best. A good story to listen to, go do something else and pick up again.

not the best

the narrator is great with his voice and distinguishing genders and individuals.

the general story is fine. cover-ups, thrills, chance meetings. it's rather unimaginative compared to other books I've read from koontz, but overall, it's fine.

my biggest complaint are the people, though, esp. the leading characters. He is very nice and understanding, helpful, buys things for the leading lady and just happens to have no financial issues or otherwise any flaws that aren't obviously contrived. he is a perfect father for the leading lady who is a perfect CHILD. only, wait, they're both grown flippin adults who seem to be developing romantic feelings for each other. and why is so much time being spent inside the lady's head about her LOOKS?! NO ONE DOES THIS. Even people with body positive issues, they'll occasionally spend time thinking about it, but EVERY.SINGLE.MOMENT. inside her head does nothing but talk about how she thinks she looks and if this were a real book, id have thrown it across the room by now due to how, yet again, people have no idea how to write female characters except to turn them into children in some way/make them all cookie-cutters.

just write a guy and then slap on a feminine name. ya done. and look, you've even written an amazing friendship between the two without need for certain romantic situations occurring! anyway, i digress now...

A stunning masterpiece that leaves you with hope.

I don't normally write reviews but this story has left me awestruck. Dean Koontz's greatest work in my opinion. At the end you will be left with a great hope for the world and a realization of the power of connections made with others, be it humans, dogs, or any other form of life capable of love.

Such a wonderful story!

Just a beautiful story of love and loyalty, in all it’s two and four legged varieties. I can see why people say this is Koontz’s best work. Be warned- it’s going to give you major dog fever :)

The Best of Koontz

Koontz is my favorite. I have read many of his works and this is, by far, the best of them. The book is 30 years old, but this is my first introduction to it. The story stands the test of time with themes of love and friendship. On a deeper level, Koontz addresses the morality of genetic testing, the power of the individual versus the government, and the meaning of life. I cried at the end simply because it was over.

Absolutely splendid. A 'tail waging' worthy tale indeed.

In a 2003 interview, DK said, "Watchers is the best book I've ever written...it's my finest hour." And I wholeheartedly agree. Watchers is a true masterpiece of fiction. There's no doubt that this novel will continue to stand the test of time.

Eduardo Ballerini's performance is, quite simply, beautiful. Whether the characters are human, monsters, animals, or NSA agents, the life and depth of emotion he brings out in them is unparalleled.
MY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Best book by Dean Koontz

This may have been one of his earliest books but it’s my favourite. It’s got everything you could want in what he calls a rip roaring good story.

Absolutely loved it, start to finish. I first read it some years ago and listening to it some 20 years later didn't take anything away from the experience. A really good bit of escapism.

What a book!
The blurb didn’t read amazingly to me, however, it truly was an amazing read.

The story is utterly incredible and you fall in love with the wonderful characters.

I wish it didn’t end .

Read it! ( or listen ;)
