Publisher's Summary

A no-nonsense and helpful guide on how to cope with a slew of mental-health issues that are hell-bent on ruining the lives of millions of people worldwide

Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in.

With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately to the non-emergencies of everyday life, and to deal effectively with old, or newly acquired, traumas (particularly post-traumatic stress disorder).

Untuck this recording quality

The echoey recording disrupts the delivery. Audible - have some standards and get this thing re recorded.

This is a smart person - with useful info -that was recorded in a do it yourself manner.

The crap quality of recording matters - audible-wtf?

Not for intellectuals.

Looking for an intellectual, thought-provoking look at anxiety? This isn't it. This is the trashy college girl at the bar talking about her psychology class after about 4 beers. Just as she says something to grab your attention, she uses profanity in the most awkward and unprofessional way possible.

Horrible sound quality. Horrible.

Reading is difficult right now so I use audible. This book is useful, but I can never recommend the audible version because the sound is so horrible. I wonder how the author would feel if a recording engineer was out there trying to pass as a therapist. It’s almost impossible to listen to. It sound like she’s in a warehouse, edits are obvious (the including clipped words, the ambient sound is stressful — like a bad smell, the background noises, and even extra voices(!) now and then, are distracting. I hope she re-does it properly soon so I can recommend this recording. Her voice is fine, the sound quality is, yes, horrible — as if she just turned on her computer and started talking. No excuse for this except ignorance - it’s too easy to record decent sound nowadays. If I sound angry, well, that’s probly why I need this book. Look forward to when I can hear it.

Horrible f*cking recording (and the cussing like a sailor is really annoying)

Ugh - I really want to like this book. I think the information is highly valuable and I was looking forward to listening... but then I started listening. First, did the author record this on her phone in her kitchen? Why oh why was there not more effort put in to getting a clear recording of this book? The tinny, echo is distracting, and -hello! - it’s an AUDIO book! A f*cking audiobook (as our author would say). Which leads me to my next point. The vulgar language - distracting and ridiculous. We get it - she’s a doctor who talks (and writes?) like a college girl who’s had twenty too many wine coolers (again). Yuck. Just dumb. Listening to this book makes me want to drink twenty too many wine coolers. Enough.

Audio quality is awful.

The audio quality was so awful that it distracted me from all other qualities of this book. It sounds like it was recorded on someone’s cell phone. I got 2 hours into the book and couldn’t handle it anymore. The

Poor Audio Quality

Unfortunately this wasn't recorded with good/professional equipment and sounds like someone is yelling at you from across the room on speaker phone. very unpleasant to listen to. The information isn't especially helpful for anyone already familiar with therapy and a mindfulness about their behavior. Again the audio is a big drag

works

If you're struggling with anxiety, this book really does work. Fancy Dr. lady actually gives you helpful ways to say "screw you anxiety! I don't F with you" I wish the quality of the audio was better, but small price to pay when anxiety rules your life like it did mine.

Too much swearing!!!

Even though her intention is to explain how the brain works and why we get certain reactions from it, there is too much anger and swearing!! instead of putting me in a relaxing mode so that I can concentrate, the narrator’s voice is irritating and the swearing is unbearable! If I could I would ask my money back
There are many other books form which you can get the same information but in much more respectful way.

Good content, terrible audio

I picked up some good info from the book, plus a few insightful things that will help me moving forward. Faith G.Harper is very likeable but the audio quality is awful! It’s like she’s recorded it in the bath under the water and it’s poorly edited. I’m not sure how this could be charged as a whole credit, I get one credit a month so paid £8 for this - not worth it.

Painful

I could not continue with this book. Quality is bad, like somebody record ing with an iPhone. And all the "fu@k" words feels so forced just to be cool.

Just painful, and honestly nothing you have not heard already

Skip it

Horrendous audio quality and littering of swear words make this unlistenable. I’ve got no problem with swearing, I do it all the time, but when your trying to explain something nuanced and complex you need to widen your vocabulary a bit. Altogether it just sounds immature and makes you question the author’s understanding and authority on the subject. They may well be an expert, but they don’t come across as one.

Strictly for teens who don't mind swearing

Couldn't get through it as three things really bothered me; the author is inordinately proud of her PhD and brings it up every few minutes; she speaks as though she is counselling teens and adds lots of swearing to appeal to them; and the sound quality is really poor.

Too fast

The author talks way too fast and the amount of swearing in it isn’t really necessary at certain points you can hear vehicles in the background. The audio sounds so far away. Waste of money.

If Quentin Tarantino wrote self help books.

Great messages and advice totally undermined by the bad language of the author. Although it may be more convincing if Samual Jackson was doing the reading! Thank fu@k it was free.

Simply explains complex emotions & reactions.

Having had therapy I was already aware of a lot of what is discussed, but Faith has explained it all in a way that has helped me understand & realise things on a different level. I would recommend this for anyone dealing with personal trauma, only shame was the quality of recording.

frustrating to listen to

I enjoyed the content and think Faith delivered the content of the book well, however the audio recording itself wasn't great. it was echoing, sounded tinny and at times I found it challenging to hear as the volume dropped out.

if you can stick with it, it was helpful, however I hope that this is re-recorded in a better quality recording.

Pragmatic and easy to grasp

Riddled with swear words and a bit of ... fluff, the book does give some good nitty gritty science info whilst being broken down with some more... "shallow" language and terminology.
Has some fantastic concepts and a great into for anyone wanting to go down the path of self help as one of their first books.

The audio of being filmed with less than ideal sound proofing, you hear pages turn and a slight room echo.

Don’t get it!

Omg this is book is so badly narrated that even if the context was good you do not want to listen. Don’t waste your money or time. I’m just surprised, didn’t she write the book herself? Yet she can’t read it properly?!!! She reads like a child there is no way you want to respect her enough to listen to her “words or wisdom”. She’s also trying so hard with the swear words trying to come across cool like Mark Manson with his “The Subtle Art or Not Giving a Fuck” book. Copying his title style she has loyally fucked up!
Don’t get it it’s bad!

Basic and unhelpful

Firstly, the audio quality of this book is terrible. There was a lot of ambient noise that was really distracting. Secondly, perhaps the author intended all the swearing to make her "edgy" or "not like all the other" books out there with her hip swears, but it just sounded stupid. It didn't add anything of value to this narrative. Thirdly, there is nothing in this you can't learn for zero dollars simply following up sources in wikipedia or youtube for the same topics. Fourthly, I checked out when she started talking about alternative remedies and "energy healers" as viable treatments.

This whole book is basically "this is the chemical response for trauma" and "if you want it to go away, you have to fix it" (duh, that's why we picked up this book), then "here are some methods for fixing it - change your diet, do more exercise, get to the root of the problem, go talk to someone about it etc etc". Pretty sure anyone trying to figure out how to manage their mental health for real will already know about these. I don't recommend this at all.

Good content - poor production

The author & reader should have invested in a better microphone.
I don’t want to hear you turning the book or have poor sound quality.
Only thing missing is a bird or a dog barking in the background.
I’ll probably buy the hard copy to get the content
Damn shame!

Could be good but can’t listen through it

This has the making of being a great listen. However the poor recoding is so distracting I only got 15 mins through. The low hum of the recording device and frequent creeks and groans of background noises were literally all I heard. I think this could benefit from professional recording.
Glad I only used a credit.
