Publisher's summary

Traumatic experiences leave a “living legacy” of effects that often persist for years and decades after the events are over. Historically, it has always been assumed that retelling the story of what happened would resolve these effects.

However, survivors report a different experience: Telling and re-telling the story of what happened to them often reactivates their trauma responses, overwhelming them rather than resolving the trauma. To transform traumatic experiences, survivors need to understand their symptoms and reactions as normal responses to abnormal events. They need ways to work with the symptoms that intrude on their daily activities, preventing a life beyond trauma.

Dr. Janina Fisher, international expert on trauma, has spent over 40 years working with survivors, helping them to navigate the healing journey. In Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma, she shows how the legacy of symptoms helped them survive and offers:

  • Step-by-step strategies that can be used on their own or in collaboration with a therapist
  • Simple diagrams that make sense of the confusing feelings and physical reactions survivors experience
  • Worksheets to practice the skills that bring relief and ultimately healing

A Must-Read!!!

I have been an Audible customer for many years and this is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review. If you have cPTSD, the audio and accompanying worksheets are excellent, straightforward resources. I wish you all well on your healing journeys!

Excellent! Excellent explanation of trauma with roadmap for resolution

Excellent information and a road map to gain control of our lives. Ever wonder why your life isn’t going the way you thought it would? This book may provide the answer. It’s difficult, not impossible, to find a good therapist who is familiar with Bessel Van dear Kolk, Judith Herrmann and Janina Fishers’ work and trauma recovery. This book can help you understand yourself.

Stunned, profound, hopeful

So stunned by the information in this workbook and ‘Healing the fragmented Selves of trauma survivors’. It totally describes the effects of my childhood trauma and my progress towards healing. Somehow I got in touch with some of my parts. It is through asking how they feel and want that I know how I feel and want. Such interesting and transformative insight. The neuroscience knowledge behind this gave me even more confidence that this is a breakthrough to help the victims of childhood abuse. It’s truly a life saving breakthrough.

Excellent

I found the information in this book to be very helpful. The narrator has a nice voice but beware, I did hear a lot of clicking in the background.

Great book; highly recommended

I’ve read a lot of the books out there and this one seems to pull together the best of what I found out there in a manner that is concise, and narrated with a very warm loving tone.

Before I finished the book today, I had already recommended it to three people and expect I’ll be recommending this to many people for a while to come.

Wow! Janina Knocks it out of the park once again!!

Absolutely love Janina's work in trauma and the accompanying therapeutic modalities she employs and mentions in this book. I highly recommend giving this a listen to all mental health professionals, victims/survivors of trauma (abused and otherwise) and family members/caretakers of those who e experience a traumatic past. Camille's voice is soothing, easy to understand and inflects at the perfect moments.

Where are worksheets?

I found this book to be informative and helpful but other books include attachments of worksheets, diagrams etc.. I would have been better off buying the book!

Very helpful insight into how trauma affects us

I’m no expert on trauma but after listening to this audiobook, I feel I have a far better insight into how I’ve got to where I am, and most importantly how to make some adjustments to improve tire quality of life.

This is a good book for someone like me who wants an easy read that doesn’t baffle or confuse.

I’m inclined to seek out more work by Janina Fisher to further assist my journey.

Read this while going to therapy for ptsd. This was very useful to help structure the healing process. Narrator voice was clear and had a warmth to it.
