Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Trauma and Recovery is revered as the seminal text on understanding trauma survivors. By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Harvard psychiatrist Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma is inseparable from its social and political context. Drawing on her own research on incest, as well as a vast literature on combat veterans and victims of political terror, she shows surprising parallels between private horrors like child abuse and public horrors like war.

Resumen del Editor
The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes - in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body.
This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering. It is a comprehensive self-help guide for working through the toxic legacy of the past and for achieving a rich and fulfilling life.

We humans tend to get in our own way time and time again - whether it comes to not speaking up for ourselves, going back to bad romantic partners, our umpteenth diet, or engaging in any of a range of bad habits we just can’t seem to shake. In Rewire, renowned psychotherapist Richard O’Connor, PhD, reveals why our bad habits die so hard. We have two brains - one a thoughtful, conscious, deliberative self, and the other an automatic self that does most of the work without our attention.

I am a Marriage and Family Therapist and I had been trying to figure out my own family of origin issues. This book single-handedly changed my life and allowed me to just be. I cannot fit a review about this book without becoming a dissertation. Instead I'll just say this: If you are a therapist that works with trauma, read this book. If you are a regular person who has had an abusive past, read this book. If you are a regular person and you know a friend who has experienced abuse, read this book. If you are trying to be a better person, read this book. If you want to understand human psychology in the most intensive and deeply emotional ways, read this book.
Thank you for taking the time to read this review. Best of luck in your journey <3

I can't express how much this book helped me
Being in therapy for a long time, I have not felt as good as after reading this book. I feel like this book is the only "thing" WHO can understand me. I treat this book as my friend. When I get sad, I read the chapters of this book and find peace and acceptance. And later it brings happiness and strength.

High level language, however a great book!
This book was suggested from my spouse. They grew up in a fairly common family paradigm; where, I’ve spent 39 years in a fog of my childhood abusers. Even gave a kidney to my father who was the worst offender. Now I can actually see more clearly. I can see the people around me for themselves, rather than my abusive caretakers and siblings. Thank you for this tome of mindfulness!

Saved my Life And helped me through a few more days
Helped keep me alive and make me feel like I’m not evil. Kept me alive for a few days until my first therapy appointment. This has been vital to me feeling safe and like I’m good not evil. Like I’m on the good side not the evil side. So helpful - listening regularly and it is helping with my cptsd, ocd, Tourette’s and anxiety. It has been a big help. I know longer feel the need to dissassociate. I just wish it had a young female reader - I have trouble trusting men or women over 40. I’m still glad I listened because I was in so need of help and listening to this saved my life. There are so many bad things out there claiming to be from psychology but are based on old sexist, and abusive techniques. This book addresses this and helps so much. I was going to stab myself last night and was desperate for something to help me. This made all of the difference. Thank you for helping me feel sane and like the innocent child I was when I was hurt so many times.
