Things We Do in the Dark is a brilliant new thriller from Jennifer Hillier, the award-winning author of the breakout novels Little Secrets and Jar of Hearts. Paris Peralta is suspected of killing her celebrity husband, and her long-hidden past now threatens to destroy her future.

When Paris Peralta is arrested in her own bathroom—covered in blood, holding a straight razor, her celebrity husband dead in the bathtub behind her—she knows she'll be charged with murder. But as bad as this looks, it's not what worries her the most. With the unwanted media attention now surrounding her, it's only a matter of time before someone from her long hidden past recognizes her and destroys the new life she's worked so hard to build, along with any chance of a future.

Twenty-five years earlier, Ruby Reyes, known as the Ice Queen, was convicted of a similar murder in a trial that riveted Canada in the early nineties. Reyes knows who Paris really is, and when she's unexpectedly released from prison, she threatens to expose all of Paris's secrets. Left with no other choice, Paris must finally confront the dark past she escaped, once and for all.

Because the only thing worse than a murder charge are two murder charges.

Editorial Review

No frills, just thrills—and a Billy Joel quote
It's not often that a thriller starts with a Billy Joel quote, so when I heard the opening of Things We Do in the Dark, I knew it was going to be one of my favorites this year! Paris Peralta is arrested in her bathroom, covered in blood and holding the murder weapon next to her dead husband. As bad as the situation looks, Paris's main concern is her hidden past resurfacing. As her shocking past is unraveled, the story becomes more addicting. The complex characters, different POVs, and stunning twists had me opting to sit by the pool all day long listening, while I thanked author Jennifer Hillier for releasing this just in time for my birthday. — Patty C.

Predictable

Super predictable. Didn’t love the narrator. Usually love her books but this one fell short.

Wonderful Book

Beautifully written, wonderfully narrated! I found myself saying, “What?!!!” out loud many times while listening. I now have to read all of Jennifer Hillier’s books!

Unique take on a Whodunnit with interesting characters

I really enjoyed this book and the narrator! I feel like many whodunnit stories become cliche by trying too hard to force every character to have a motive. I don't even think the mystery aspect of this book was where it shined the most. Rather, the gradual revelation of Paris's troubled past and struggles was gripping and kept me listening intently! Excited to read more of Hillier's work!

Unsatisfying

The twist wasn't so much a twist as a gentle curve in the road. Both times. The narrator, rather than taking context clue from vocabulary, chose to do a posh English for the detective and it was rather disconcerting to hear blue collar slang in an RP voice. The build up was so strong and then.... poof. Like a rollercoaster that ratchets you up for an hour only to do a little dip then you have to walk down two flights of stairs to get back out to the park.
