Publisher's summary

The electrifying new historical thriller featuring Harriet Westerman and Gabriel Crowther

London, 1785: When the body of a former West Indies planter is found staked out by St Paul's Cathedral, suspicion falls at once on a runaway slave. But the answer is not that simple. The planter's death brings tragedy for Francis Glass, a freed slave working as a bookseller, and a painful reminder of the past for William Geddings, senior footman in the household of unconventional widow Harriet Westerman.

Harriet is reluctant to confront the powerful world of the slave trade but she and her friend, anatomist Gabriel Crowther, must face its shameful truths - and the fact that much of Britain's wealth is built on wilful destruction of human life. The secrets of London's slave owners reveal a network of alliances across the capital. And while some people will risk everything to preserve their reputation, some acts can never be forgiven.

Problematic Series

I read the first 3 books in this series and loved them. I love mysteries and especially those in an historical setting that is well developed and believable. That is certainly the case with this series. I also really liked Jenny Sterlin as a reader for the 2nd and 3rd books and would have liked to hear her read the rest of the series. But that is not possible atm. One major problem is book four has not been made available on Audible. I listened to the first 3 books in quick succession but then began the wait for the 4th book. When this, the 5th book was up on audible I was surprised they jumped over book 4. So I waited, and after almost 9 years with no book 4 I gave up on waiting. The long break means I have forgotten a lot of what happened in the earlier books and was also disappointed Jenny Sterlin no longer reads the series. I strongly believe a series should keep the same reader as adding a new reader is always going to disappoint listeners. Hinton is fine as a reader, but he is just not as good as Sterlin. If they ever do release book 4 I may go back and listed to the series again. Since there have been no new books of any kind from Robertson I assume she has stopped writing for some reason. which is too bad.
