Publisher's summary

Harriet wishes to turn her estate into a refuge for orphans. Viscount Wendover wishes to use the estate to restore his family fortunes. Marriage to each other seems like a convenient arrangement.

Harriet Linfield is a lady novelist who has been disillusioned by love. She sets out to write more realistic tales about the emotion when she returns home to Linfield Court for the summer. Vowing to avoid any romantic entanglements along the way, she focuses instead on her writing and her plan to turn the estate she inherited from her uncle into a refuge for orphans.

Oliver, Viscount Wentford, is determined to restore his family fortunes. But his plans for the estate he inherited are in direct opposition to the wishes of Harriet, his new neighbour. Upon meeting her, Oliver is amused when, in response to his provocative comments, she informs him that she intends to make him the villain of her next book. But his amusement swiftly turns to dismay when circumstances align to show him in that exact light.

When an enemy comes back into Harriet's life, she sees that love isn't as clear-cut as the romantic tales she pens. But will the viscount manage to discard his villainous mantle to become Harriet's real-life hero?

Clean historical romance

I didn't read the blurb about the book, so I wasn't sure what to expect from the story. For the first third to half of the book, it seemed like your typical Regency type romance story. It was fine. But then after that point, more of a plot became apparent. From the on, I liked it much more. A solid 4 star story!

I listened to the audiobook. I was torn. The narrator did a very good job with reading and characters. I just wasn't a huge fan of her voice. She sounded like an older lady. I even had to Google her to see what she looked like in real life. Then there were some technical issues. A couple of times there were editing mistakes where the same phrase was read twice. I could hear baxknground noise at other times. And the most annoying thing was something with the narrator's mouth. Sometimes it sounded like she was chewing in gum or had a lisp or swallowed.or something. It was annoying, especially when I was listening with my ear buds. It all could have been in the editing. The narrator is talented.

I want to thank the author and publisher for gifting me a cudio copy of the book. I'm happy to leave an honest review.

Lovely!

This audiobook was wonderful- I loved the narrator- I do listen to audiobooks at 2x speed because I prefer it at a faster pace than normal and the voice was still great.
The main characters had a lot of ups and downs…. Just when I thought things were going well Oliver would say or do something stupid and they would be mad at each other again. It was fun to have characters that were flawed and didn’t do everything perfectly.
This book had romance, humor, mystery and best of all… a happy ending.
This author really has a way with words. I had to look up a few phrases (because I’m a nerd and like to know exactly what things mean).
I have read the first book in this series and reading it first added to the enjoyment of this one but things were explained well enough in #2 that you could read it as a stand-alone.
I can’t wait for more from this author!

loved it

I read this book 1 1/2 years ago and enjoyed it then. (See original review below) But I got the opportunity to listen to the audiobook and I think I liked it even more. The narrator did a great job of bringing the story to life. Great characterizations. Thoroughly enjoyable. (And since my original reading I did read more of the author's books).
*****
This is a new to me author and reading this book only made me wish that I had the first one in this series already cued up on my Kindle. I enjoyed this story. I loved Oliver. He was really patient and didn't get riled up with Harry and the accusations she made based in her own insecurity. The two of them had some great banter that was fun to read.
In addition to a fun romance, there was intrigue in the story. Truthfully I had the villain figured out early on but it was fun to watch to see how it would play out. There was one twist I wasn't expecting though. One thing I really enjoyed was that the story allowed Harry to save herself from a perilous moment instead of relying on the hero to be heroic. In truth she was endangered three times and he didn't save her in any scenario. He worked behind the scenes and he was also a comfort to her but he wasn't the one to save the day. I liked that.
So yes, I enjoyed reading this book and would love to read the rest of the series, or other books by this author.

Gentleman hero

A gentleman hero can appear when you least expect it and come to your rescue by loving you for what you are not what you expect him to be attracted to. Good story. Enjoyed the audible but liked listening better at a high speed.
