When Niri’s nuncle dies, the coal girl finds herself suddenly penniless and alone on the streets of Brightburgh.

Her already perilous situation is further complicated by her heritage – she’s half Aeldae, a descendant of the people who enslaved the humans of the Splinterlands centuries ago. This alone brands her as both an outcast and a target.

Clinging to a glimmer of hope, Niri possesses a special coin that will grant her admission into the prestigious Stormfell Academy, renowned for its magical and martial training.

However, her hopes are dashed when she learns that the coin only provides access to the Tower of Beggars. To truly benefit from the Academy, she must find a way to pay for the lessons.

Driven by desperation, she turns to the ruins at the foot of the Stormfell, combing through the remnants in the hopes of finding a way to escape her dire circumstances and change her fate…

Torsten Weitze's The Tower of Beggars is a captivating and imaginative fantasy novel that stands out for its unique premise and engaging storytelling. The book introduces a fascinating world where a tower houses beggars, each possessing distinct magical abilities, bound by ancient pacts.

Weitze's world-building is exceptional, creating a rich tapestry of lore and a creative magic system that is deeply integrated into the characters' lives. The protagonist, the "Beggars' Prince," embarks on a compelling journey of self-discovery, supported by a vibrant cast of characters, each with their own unique personality and backstory. Their interactions are a highlight, offering both witty banter and moments of profound connection.

The narrative skillfully blends action, mystery, and character development, with an intricately woven plot that keeps readers hooked. The pacing is excellent, ensuring a consistently engaging experience.

For those seeking a fresh, character-driven fantasy with a touch of humor and an original magical concept, The Tower of Beggars is highly recommended. It's a promising start to what looks to be a remarkable series.

What a great surprise....

Story is a classic tale of has nothing and rises in an academy setting. What I like about this story is that it seems to be headed in a direction where the main character breaks the isolation. I think too often stories like to embrace a lonely tale of an individual with talent is recognized only to continue pushing others away.

The series is far along in its native German but there is not a release schedule I can find for English translation.

The narrator is male for a female MC but I think it fits in with the large amount of male characters.

Academy centered underdog tale
