Endearing heroes and demon fighting

The newest series by phenom writer TJ Reynolds once again casts vivid imagination with characters who’ll bleed and yearn, carrying us through emotional investment and thrill rides across his fantasy landscape. Travis Baldree’s narration is exquisite, matching the youthful ambition, sorrowful trials and bloodthirsty wraiths to perfection.
I am way on board to see Mags and Marek fight again!

Interesting spin on a well know class archetype.

In a genre flooded with a mixed bag of world, story, and character development the first book in this series stands out as one of the better ones. Narrated by the amazing Travis Baldree the characters come to life as they grow and overcome challenges. The world development is interesting and is left open enough to continue developing as the series progresses. While the "magic/skill system" in the series is not novel it is well done, logical, and easy enough to understand.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one.

I loved the characters and the action! Wouldn’t change a single thing about it! If you are sleeping in this one, don’t. It’s worth the listen!

This is a perfectly good read

This is not a bad story, but it’s not a particularly good story within the lit rpg genre. Travis carried the book hard with his amazing work, it just feels like the story is forcing problems then hand waving them away when they become troublesome or get close to being resolved in a way that feels like the main characters actually did anything meaningful… over all I would not refund it or drop the book, but it won’t be very high up on my recommendation list.

Story is good, main characters are dumb

The overall story is unique and pretty fun. It’s a good listen when you’re doing other things.

But dear lord, the male and female leads are unbearably stupid at times. And these aren’t young characters. I get that they’ve not moved out of town, but they miss things that should be considered obvious with a minimal amount of forethought. It’s especially annoying at times since the male MC is supposed to be intelligent and had a ton of book knowledge.

Anyway, I see a lot of potential and hope there’s better character growth.

I want to rate this lower, but I can't.

Just a heads up, DNF with about 1.5 hours left at 1.5X speed.

I wanted to rate this lower, I really did. It features one of the tropes I despise most in fantasy fiction (a power that'll make you lose your mind if you use it too much).

The trope is extra worse in the LitRPG genre. What are we even here for if not go live vicariously though a protagonist progressing, kicking ass and taking names?

Unfortunately, the existence and prevalence of this trope dragged the the entire story down for me. I couldn't stand it, I hated it.

So why didn't I rate it lower?

Honestly, because it's competent enough (and Travis Baldtree). I can't, in good conscious, give a competent story a one star because it doesn't align with my personal preference. That feels... wrong, gross.

I CAN warn you away though if, like me, you hate that 'protagonist losing his mind' schtick, along with a weepy, overly broody protagonist (the two are obviously linked).

I can’t wait to book 2. No romance friends who are really friends like siblings is refreshing. I love that don’t get me wrong I am a woman i get it, but I’m tired of friends pinning for each other, which sometimes makes a story messy. I really like the dynamics of this story, can’t wait to continue the adventure.
