Publisher's Summary

The Silver Mark is the second installment in Crow Investigations, an exciting paranormal mystery series from best-selling author of magical fiction, Sarah Painter.

London is Lydia Crow’s city so when a man is found hanged under Blackfriars Bridge, she takes it personally. Even when it seems as if the Silver Family might be involved, Lydia refuses to back down. The Silver Family, who run the finest law firm in London, have a gift for persuasion. In the 'Bad Old Days' it was said they could make a man jump off a roof by convincing him he could fly. But that's all in the past...isn’t it?

Everybody wants something from Lydia: Her Uncle wants her to join the family business, her ghostly flatmate wants her to test her power, DCI Fleet wants a relationship, and the Silver Family want her to keep her nose out.

Trouble is, Lydia has never been much good at taking orders.

“My favourite new urban fantasy series, clever and twisty and deliciously magical.” (Stephanie Burgis)

I'm hooked

The Silver Mark appeared on my "recommended by Audible list". After downloading. I discovered it was book 2 in a series so downloaded book one. Book one was good but the second in the series is even better. Good plot, characters developing nicely, believable dialogue plus a touch of magic.

The Silver Mark

I thoroughly enjoyed this audible book it was well read & the narrator moved the developing plot along without losing the listener or the obvious & subtle clues.
As the 2nd book in the series it tidied up many of the lose ends from book 1 & continued to flesh out many of the main characters.
All in all its a delightful series & good fun to listen to/read & I would recommend & I'm looking forward to book 3.

Disappointing

Had to force myself to continue listening. The first book was a bit annoying but I thought the 2nd might get better because the theme is basically good. However, Lydia comes over as a bit pathetic, forever questioning her abilities and going on and on about being one of the Crow family etc etc. Doesn’t seem to do too much actual detective work either. I think the narrator’s tone made it worse too. Very annoying.

Enjoyable Listen

Interesting story and concepts about power and where it originates from. Developing sub plots keep things moving along nicely.

Super

Excellent series of books. The narrator is awesome and the books are so well written. Just thought I'd leave this review before I listen to the final book. It'll no doubt be as addictive as the others in the series

Overall a bit disappointing

The second in the Crow Investigations series. I am not sure why but this felt a bit flat to me. The investigations were mostly bland and whilst this was part of the point and reason for the investigation she took on unpaid! It felt a little forced. As does the shoe-horning Emma into the story. Sadly Angie was barely mentioned and the focus on the "Families" was consistently overstated, as was the dream issue, although clearly setting things up for later books.
Overall a bit disappointing, and the feel of a bit of a filler. However the world is an interesting one and I still feel this could develop into something really good.
It will be interesting to see how things move on in later books.
The narration was average, the tone and intonation mostly accurate but not always and the editing could and should have been a bit better.

4.49 stars overall

A private detective story with magical and financially powerful families as protagonists. I wish I'd started with the first in the series, but will fill in with the first before moving to the next.
