If you’re interested in making money with stocks, you’re not alone. A recent Gallup poll showed that nearly 6 in 10 American adults have money in the stock market. But unless you’ve previously worked as an investment banker, you might have better odds of making money at the casino than with stocks. In fact, researchers from the University of California found that 90 percent of retail investors and day traders lose money. Which is why most people think winning in the stock market is simply a game of chance.

Fruits and vegetables can be pricey, especially if they’re out of season. And, of course, they can be even more expensive if you choose to go organic. You could always plant your own garden, but, maybe, you don’t have enough space outside or, maybe, you live in a colder climate. Unfortunately, not everyone lives where they can plant an outdoor garden. The alternative is to set up an indoor hydroponic system.

Publisher's summary
You too can master the secrets of soil to grow healthy plants and bountiful, nutritious produce.
Home to beneficial microorganisms and packed densely with nutrients, soil is the perfect growing medium that acts as a personal nutritionist to the plants it supports, allowing them to thrive naturally.
It also provides the right structure for helping the roots to grow, and in turn, these supply the leaves with water and nutrients, giving way to a bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables.
But when your soil is lacking in quality, or gets damaged due to certain gardening practices, it can no longer promote plant growth.
In this definitive guide to working with soil, you’ll discover:
- Soil science: demystified and simplified–discover the microscopic secrets that give life to your garden.
- The natural structure of soil–find out what makes soil the perfect cocktail for supporting life.
- Why you should test your garden soil before planting (plus various DIY tests that you can easily perform on your own without any special equipment).
- Soil amendments 101: fix your soil’s nutrient profile, structure, and quality by following these simple yet effective guidelines.
- The why, how, and when of fertilizers (including recommendations on what to use).
- Practical soil-friendly gardening tips and practices that you can implement today.
- The ultimate mulching and composting guide–enrich your soil in an organic way, and make your own composts by following the step by step techniques included.
- And much more!
Soil health is intimately linked to plant health…and ultimately, to yours too. Are you ready to use soil science to give a boost to your garden?

Helped me improve my garden
I found this guide very helpful and easy to follow. I discovered why my previous attempts at gardening failed throughout the years because the quality of the soil was poor. This guide helped me understand the science behind soil, how to improve its quality and get better results from gardening. I now have longer-lasting and healthy plants that complement the look of my garden.

Comprehensive Soil Guide for Serious Gardeners
Jessie Kelias has created an in-depth guide to gardening starting with the soil. There are clear and precise instructions on how to take and test soil samples, check for pH levels and make adjustments according to what you are growing, and how to mulch and compost. You don’t have to worry about connecting the dots. The author does all that for you.
In Chapter 2, Food Chains introduces you to decomposers whose main goal in life is to turn everything into soil. This interesting and well-organized information takes the mystery out of soil production by Nature. I already knew the value of earthworms and fungi but there are so many other collaborators.
The future is right under out feet. Listening to this audiobook shows us just how much we don’t know. Never mind, the author will teach you everything you need to know to creat a fabulous garden. She has generously included a PDF of her book which you will want to keep in a handy place and refer to often while your gardening habits are being established. Highly Recommended.

GREAT RESOURCE!!
This is the comprehensive soil and gardening book my wife and I have been looking for! We've been in the beginning stages of garden planning and realized that our soil is too clay-like to grow what we want. So, we need to supplement our soil and find ways to test the soil's ability before we plant...to ensure a good crop. So...the chapters on solving soil problems were the most beneficial for us, especially the soil testing chapter. We're looking forward to getting our hands "dirty" now with the appropriate knowledge we know have from this book. Great resource, thank you!

A Must Have Resource BEFORE planting your garden!
A very thorough, informative, and easy to follow resource for what needs to be done to prep the foundation for your garden! I must admit I am new to gardening. Last year I literally just tilled up a spot in my yard, mixed in some topsoil, planted random starter plants and watered along with some miracle grow and prayed for the best. ;) After listening to this book, I have a much deeper understanding of the science behind soil, planning for set-up, testing, and how to improve it! I am so excited to implement this knowledge and provide a much healthier foundation for a more successful garden this year! Thank you for this 1 stop resource! I will never look at soil as just dirt again! :)

Get the right soil
I really loved this book. I love plants and gardening. I was trying to grow vegetables this year with seeds in the house because I live in Utah, which have cold, harsh winters. But my seeds aren't growing. The pictures show a month of nothing growing in the boxes. I have a heat pad, and a grow light. After reading this book, I realized I planted the seeds in the wrong kind of soil. Never use mulch for seedlings. I need to start over and get the right kind of soil. I really enjoyed this book!

Story
Soil is the unlikely story of our most maligned resource as swashbuckling hero. A saga of bombs, ice ages and civilisations falling. Of ancient hunger, modern sicknesses and gastronomic delight. It features poison gas, climate collapse and a mind-blowing explanation of how rain is formed. For too long, we've not only neglected the land beneath us, we've squandered and debased it, by over-clearing, over-grazing and over-ploughing.
