Publisher's Summary

The pause-resisting new novel from the internationally best-selling author known for her "conversational writing style and a knack for making readers care about her characters" (The Washington Post) takes us into the homes of an idyllic suburban neighborhood where we discover the burning secrets hiding just below the surface.

Bucolic Newport Cove, where spontaneous block parties occur on balmy nights and all of the streets are named for flowers, is proud of its distinction of being named one the top 20 safest neighborhoods in the US.

It's also one of the most secret-filled.

Kellie Scott has just returned to work after a decade of being a stay-at-home mom. She's adjusting to high heels, scrambling to cook dinner for her family after a day at the office - and soaking in the dangerous attention of a very handsome, very married male colleague.

Kellie's neighbor, Susan Barrett, begins every day with fresh resolutions: She won't eat any carbs, she'll go to bed at a reasonable hour, and she'll stop stalking her ex-husband and his new girlfriend.

Gigi Kennedy seems to have it all together - except her teenage daughter has turned into a hostile stranger, and her husband is running for Congress, which means her old skeletons are in danger of being brought into the light.

Then a new family moves to this quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac. Tessa Campbell seems friendly enough to the other mothers, if a bit reserved. Then the neighbors notice that no one is ever invited to Tessa's house. And soon it becomes clear that Tessa is hiding the biggest secret of all.

Continued waiting for the climax of the story

While reading The Perfect Neighbors, by Sarah Pekkanen, I continued to feel as if we remained in those first chapters of a book where the author is establishing the characters and setting- that surely something more than descriptive information would start to flow soon. But every storyline seemed to transition on to a weak climax or no climax at all. When I began a listening session before going to sleep one light, someone was was driving around in a vet and all of a sudden the narrators voice stopped and I was thanked for listening to the audiobook!!! I actually checked the counter on the app because o was so surprised the book was over!!! None of the storylines had been brought to a close- not enough for me anyhow.

And the narrator- Madeleine Maby? I just don't know. I'm pretty sure her voice just gets on my nerves . . . I even looked her up in the Web thinking maybe seeing her face would help me to put things together better. Nope. Ms Maby just didn't work for me. Sorry.

I would not recommend this book to friends. I can't figure out what is supposed to be the main idea.that neighbors are all different and they are all hiding things? That's typical for all neighborhoods everywhere.

WORST NARRATOR ever!

Would you be willing to try another one of Madeleine Maby’s performances?

Never!

Any additional comments?

I came across this author after listening to her book with Greer Hendricks"The Wife Between Us" (which is one of THE BEST audible books I have listened to in a library of hundered! My new favourite!!) Unfortunately, I moved onto "The Perfect Neighbors" next and I'm going to have to purchase the Kindle edition because this is seriously the WORST NARRATOR I've ever heard. I RETURNED THE BOOK two chapters in....it has the dialogue pace of a grade one student sound.i....nnn....gggg...ou....t..the.....woooooorrrddsss. PAINFUL. I'm usually a very forgiving listener and have stuck with a lot of difficult narrations, but this was really disappointing and the first time I have ever suggested a book should be re-recorded to do it justice.

Fan of the author- this one is good but not great

Would you listen to The Perfect Neighbors again? Why?

No It was enjoyable but not my favorite from this author If you are a fan of this author you will like but if you haven't read this author before pick a different title of hers.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tessa -her story evolved in a way that was unpredictable

What about Madeleine Maby’s performance did you like?

I really prefer Cassandra Campbell as narrator- Maby's voices of the characters was not as distinct and I often got confused between characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Husbands and Wives and the things they do to and for each other

There is no Family if There no Secrets

Wonderfully written and narrated. Keep me on the tip of my toes until the very very end. Well done.

3 stars is geneerous...

I almost returned this book based on narration alone. Sometimes it's fine ( so I know she's capable) and other times it's as if she is speaking in slow motion and trying to make each syllable a seperate word for no reason. The storyline itself is just ok ,and the book feels like it ended abruptly ,with no real endings. I didn't hate it (except for the narration at times) but I also didn't really like it, and can't honestly recommend it.

Plain awful. Worst narrator EVER!!

I’ve listened to hundreds of books and always found something redeeming in them all. This one was just plain awful. The story has no point. No purpose. The characters are all unlikable. Nosy, gossipy, and just ignorant. Feels a bit too much like social media at its worst. There are several people who could have a story but there are bits of each. Not are properly formed and fleshed out. Each could have been good.....maybe... The narrator / reader.... imagine a cross between Lilith of Frazier and Siri. Sounds so robotic and absolutely no emotion in her voice. Inflection in all the wrong places, odd pauses that made me look to make sure the book was still “on” and an uncomfortable cadence that made me feel like the person was really AI or something similar. I could not wait for it to be over. I kept hoping something would happen. When two things did, it took up about 20 minutes of the book. The rest was just filler that lead no where.

Not one of her best

I’ve read several of Sarah Pekkanen’s books and enjoyed most of them a lot, but this book is definitely not one of best. The characters were well developed and parts of it were funny but overall it was pretty dull. The story is very anti climactic. I did grow to care for the characters so I finished it but almost stopped several times intending to exchange it.

Great Book but narrator gets on your nerves

Narrator could be great except for when she reads dialogue. The inflections in her voice do nothing to portray the emotion. It’s terse and dry. Annoying.

WOW!!!

I absolutely love Sarah Pekkanen’s books! This book is definitely easy to relate to because the stories of the characters could happen to any one, in any neighborhood. It could be you, your best friend, your husband, a family member...I guarantee you won’t be able to read this without some of the characters reminding you of people you know. It’s so sincere and truthful. I love how the characters lives were all so unique and individual, yet still intertwined in such realistic ways. Full of emotion, twists, turns, and surprises...you won’t want to put it down!
