Story
For thousands of years, the lonely canyon knew only wind and rain, wild animals, and an occasional native hunter. Then a trapper found a chunk of gold, and everything changed overnight. In six days, a town called Confusion appeared... and on the seventh it could disappear, consumed by the flames of lawlessness and violence. On one side are those who understand only brute force. On the other are men who want law and order but are ready to use a noose to achieve their ends.

Story
A young gunslinger is changed for the better by meeting a beautiful woman. A classic range-war Western, this novel features that powerful, romantic, strangely compelling vision of the American West for which L'Amour's fiction is known. In the author's words, "It was a land where nothing was small, nothing was simple. Everything, the lives of men and the stories they told, ran to extremes."

Publisher's summary
Blake Durant was on his way to Crimson Falls when he stopped by Jessica Gray’s ranch for water. Before he could move on again, the young widow’s son came galloping into the yard, badly beaten. Three men had stolen their two calves and beaten young Jess when he tried to stop them. Much as he knew he should just ride on, Blake knew he couldn’t. So he stood shoulder to shoulder with the young widow and her son against a vicious land-baron with an army of gunnies on his payroll. And when the gunsmoke finally cleared, the winner would take all!
Sheldon B. Cole was one of many pseudonyms used by prolific Australian writer Desmond Robert Dunn (6 November 1929 - 5 May 2003). In addition to four crime novels published under his own name, Des was a tireless western writer whose career spanned more than 50 years and well in excess of 400 oaters. These quick-moving, vivid and always compelling stories appeared under such pen-names as Shad Denver, Gunn Halliday, Adam Brady, Brett Iverson, Matt Cregan, Walt Renwick and Morgan Culp. He is also said to have written a number of the ever-popular Larry Kent PI novels, but at this late date author attribution is almost impossible. He married and divorced twice, and had three children. He died at the age of 73 in Brisbane, Queensland.

He had been hiding his true identity from his best friend, Ben, and the woman he loved, Hettie. They knew him as Nevada, a man they care for and respected, when in truth he was a wandering fugitive gunman, notorious from Nevada clear to Tombstone, Arizona.

A Tale of Courage and Justice on the Western Front
In the expansive realm of Western literature, few figures stand out as prominently as Blake Durant, the protagonist of Sheldon B. Cole's "The Loner 2: Trail to Nowhere." This audiobook, narrated with exceptional skill by Jack de Golia, is a thrilling testament to the enduring appeal of Western tales. In this review, we'll explore the narrative's powerful themes, compelling characters, and expertly crafted storytelling that make "The Loner 2" a must-listen for Western enthusiasts.
At the heart of this captivating tale is Blake Durant, a wanderer with a strong moral compass that guides him through the treacherous terrain of the Old West. Blake's character is a testament to the enduring archetype of the lone hero, much like Kevin Costner's character in the movie "Open Range." Like Costner's character, Blake is a man who is drawn into a fight not out of personal gain but out of a deep sense of right and friendship. He stands tall in the face of adversity, upholding justice and defending the helpless, even when it isn't in his best interest.
Blake's unwavering commitment to doing what is right sets the tone for the entire narrative. In a world where violence and lawlessness often prevail, he represents a beacon of hope and integrity. His actions mirror the very essence of the American frontier spirit, where individuals took it upon themselves to maintain order and protect the innocent.
The story unfolds as Blake Durant, on his journey to Crimson Falls, stops at Jessica Gray's ranch for a simple drink of water. Little does he know that this momentary pause will thrust him into a dangerous confrontation with a ruthless land baron and his army of gunnies. When Jessica's son is brutally beaten, and their calves are stolen, Blake could have chosen to ride on, minding his own business. However, his innate sense of duty and justice compels him to stay and help.
The plotline resonates strongly with the classic Western motif of a lone hero standing up against a land bully and his henchmen. This theme has long been a staple of the genre, and "The Loner 2" pays homage to it in a way that feels both fresh and timeless. It's a tale of courage and resilience, where the individual's sense of honor takes precedence over personal safety.
In the audiobook, Jack de Golia's narration is nothing short of exceptional. His voice brings the characters and the setting to life, immersing the listener in the rugged landscapes and gritty atmosphere of the Old West. De Golia's mastery of pacing and tone is evident throughout, enhancing the audiobook's overall impact. His ability to convey the emotions and complexities of each character is remarkable, making it easy for the listener to connect with the story on a profound level.
It's worth noting that the name "Blake" has Irish origins and means "black," which is apt for a character like Blake Durant, a dark rider of the plains who traverses the harsh and unforgiving Western landscape. Additionally, the name "Durant," meaning "firm" and "enduring," reflects the nature of this series. "The Loner" series is designed to endure the test of time, much like its resolute protagonist. It promises a long-lasting legacy in the realm of Western literature.
"The Loner 2: Trail to Nowhere" encapsulates the very essence of what this series should be—an odyssey of a man wandering the vast countryside and finding himself in dire situations that test his mettle. In many ways, it evokes memories of Kwai Chang Caine from the iconic series "Kung Fu." Let's delve into the fascinating comparisons and correlations between Caine and Durant.
Blake Durant and Kwai Chang Caine: Kindred Spirits of the Frontier
Both Blake Durant and Kwai Chang Caine are enigmatic figures who find themselves in extraordinary circumstances. Their journeys are defined by a profound sense of justice, moral responsibility, and a desire to make the world a better place.
Nomadic Wanderers: Both Durant and Caine are wanderers by nature. Durant roams the plains of the Old West, while Caine roams the American West in search of his own path. Their nomadic existence allows them to encounter a wide array of characters and situations, shaping their perspectives on life.
Moral Compass: A strong moral compass guides both characters. Caine's adherence to his Shaolin teachings and Durant's unwavering commitment to justice exemplify their dedication to doing what is right, even in the face of overwhelming adversity.
Protectors of the Weak: Durant and Caine share a common trait in their willingness to protect the weak and defend the innocent. Whether it's standing up to ruthless land barons or facing down adversaries with martial arts skills, they put themselves in harm's way for the greater good.
Determination and Resilience: These two characters possess an indomitable spirit and an unyielding determination. Their resolve to overcome obstacles and face danger head-on mirrors the frontier spirit of the times they inhabit.
Philosophical Depth: Both Durant and Caine possess a philosophical depth that sets them apart. Caine's wisdom is drawn from his Shaolin teachings, while Durant's insights are shaped by the rugged experiences of the Old West. Their introspection adds layers to their characters and enriches the narratives in which they are featured.
"The Loner 2: Trail to Nowhere" stands as a remarkable addition to the Western genre, driven by the moral fortitude and unwavering courage of its protagonist, Blake Durant. Sheldon B. Cole's storytelling captures the essence of the Old West, and Jack de Golia's narration breathes life into the characters and landscapes. With its timeless themes and compelling characters, this audiobook pays tribute to the classic Western tradition while carving out its own place in the annals of the genre.
As fans of Western tales, we are fortunate to have stories like "The Loner 2" that transport us to a bygone era, where honor, justice, and friendship hold sway. Blake Durant's journey exemplifies the enduring appeal of the lone hero who stands up for what is right, and his legacy is one that will undoubtedly endure, much like the series itself. So, saddle up, dear listeners, and embark on a thrilling adventure across the plains with Blake Durant in "The Loner 2: Trail to Nowhere." It's a ride you won't soon forget.
