Diamond in the rough

Before we start the review, I think you should know my background. I’ve run several dietary supplement companies and am currently writing a book on nutrition. My entire career is nutrition/fitness, and I walk the walk. The book was read while biking 2-hours through a thunderstorm after doing a brutal Starting Strength Squat workout and jogging 3-miles.

Oh, and this insane behavior is normal. I’m out here biking 2-3 hours every day. It’s another average Monday on day 56 of a cut that’s stripped 23 pounds (and counting) off my frame.

All that biking means a lot of time in the saddle. This is spent, you guessed it, with audiobooks. ~400 of them as of this writing.

I know this sounds like I’m bragging, and perhaps I am. But it’s all a build up so you actually listen to what I have to say.

Now here’s the thing. I don’t read nutrition books on audible any more. I’ve been through all the bestsellers and they’re basically all garbage. Sure, they’re written well. But the information is pseudo-science or just plain wrong.

There are however, a mere handful of them that I would recommend. Among those, Michael Matthews Bigger Leaner Stronger currently stands at my #1 pick.

That said, his new book is more of the same. Outstanding writing that cuts to the heart of the matter.

Most of the world is sitting on their couch pushing dopamine buttons with a combination of fast food, reality TV, and FaceBook feeds.

I’ve seen the results of that life and it’s hell on earth. As Zig Ziglar says, you don’t pay the price for success, you enjoy the benefits of success. You pay the price for failure.

Been paying that price yourself? Sick of living a life you know isn’t your best life?

Read this.

We all have something to work on. Personally I have more issues than the next 10-people. I struggle with this just as much as you do. We all need a little pick me up now and then.

I will warn you though. This book is not for weenies. Excuses are unwelcome at this party.

Mike pulls no punches. If you’re looking for some feel good crash diet nonsense, this isn’t your book. If you’re afraid of hard work, this isn’t your book.

But if you’re looking to change your life, start here.

Then get off your ass and do the damn work already.

Overhyped

I was recommended this book by a friend and picked up the audible copy.

The only real good thing about this book was the strategies listed. Matthews starts the book off by boasting about his strategies and techniques, but by the end of it you’re wondering, “that’s all he has to say?” He uses celebrities and famous athletes as examples, but fails to truly mention the people he’s worked with and the changes he made with real people other than 1-2 examples. He mentions over and over how he’s “changed lives” but leaves out actual examples.

After listening to the audiobook through and through several times and really letting it marinate, Matthews is no different than anyone else in the fitness industry. He mentions studies and “science backed” claims but fails to truly give the studies justice and mention the true essence of the data.
He cherry picks points and strategies that “work” and say “do this!”

If you need a casual listen, this book is good- but if you’re truly looking for an impactful book there are way better options available.

You MUST Get This!

I may not have as much experience in listening to motivational books and podcasts as some on here have, but I have invested hundreds of dollars in programs that told me it would change my life and how I approach fitness. How I wish this book was out before I fell for that trap. Michael doesn't just cover it, he dives into it. He really talks about the things that we all struggle with whether your're intermediate or advanced in your fitness journey. I could not put the book down, it ignited something in me that I have never felt before. I wanted to give it 30 days before I made a review to talk about my results since, but I could not wait. I have shared this book everyone who even mentioned that they wanted to lose weight. I am not going to lie, I really had to look deep inside of me to see if I could even live up to what the book explained to me. I am quitter. That is a characteristic that I am trying to break through my fitness and the book touches upon how the journey is SO much more than losing weight, it is a way to become a stronger person mentally. Just stop reading my review and get this book. I have the audible, I have it on kindle and I have a physical copy so it can be with me at all times. I have listened to it twice in less than a week and I am ready to dive into it again. My eyes are open and I am finally getting it. I hope I can come back in 3 months time to tell just how much this book has changed my life. Please do not wait any longer, get it!

Great little book

I have always loved Mike Matthews, ever since I found him online. I've been listening and reading him for a couple years now, and I am 40 lbs lighter and quite a bit stronger thanks to him.

This book is a great primer on how to improve the most important areas of your life. If you are not into fitness, you should still buy this book. I've already have tons of practical steps that I am putting into action because of this book, and NONE of the big ones has anything to do with fitness.

Fitness is important, and this book will give you some tools and help motivate you to get in shape... along with motivating you to transform yourself into person you've always wanted to be in every other area of life.

The only critique I would give this book is that somebody else should have narrated it. Mike Matthews does a fine job speaking. I listen to his podcasts all the time. But as an AVID audiobook listener, I generally expect a little bit more of a "performance" from the narrator. This felt like a 5 hour long podcast. Not bad, but not great either.

... it's generally a bad idea for author's to narrate their own books anyway.

But that is NOT a reason to pass up on this book. The tools in here are too valuable, and Mike still was his usual charming self.

Get this book. If there is anything in your life that you might like to improve, you need this book.

Brilliant

I had a great time listening to this book. Done in two days. I am struggling with finishing my doctoral dissertation end of this year. Many of the doubts and the second thoughts I am experiencing are featured in this book. In many parts I had a feeling that Mathews is speaking directly to me. It actually helps a lot when we realize that we are not struggling alone and there is a way to end the suffering and do the work.

Mike Matthews has done it again!!!

This is by far the best book I have read to get my motivation going. Mike Matthews continues to impress with his writing and this may be, in my opinion, his best book yet. he is very engaging, motivating and no BS. I have been working out for many years now and will every now and then go through a slump of motivation. After reading this, I know what it takes to overcome those slumps not just in my workouts but in my life. Mike says some of the most encouraging words I have ever heard. I highly recommend reading this book and telling your friends and family about this so they can to better their lives. Great job Mike. I plan on reading this again and again.

No Nonsense, straight up and to the point(s)!

In this book, Matthews gives it to you as it is. No fluff, while still being able to weave in depth useful psychology, that can be used in almost any aspect of your life. A definite must read. 👍

More than just a book for workout motivation

To be honest I have plenty of motivation for going to the gym and if I don't feel motivated one day I just go any way. So I did not listen to this book particularly for needed workout motivation (although it did increase my motivation to workout even further!). The reason I bought this book anyways was that I heard a few parts of the audiobook on one of his podcasts on YouTube. This got me intrigued and made me realize it is not just about finding motivation for working out. I think the book is more about how to improve your life in general. A lot of people talk about what they want to do in their lives, but don't succeed in this because they simply are not willing to take the effort. This book really gives you the tools and motivation to turn your life from something mediocre to something fulfilling and next level. It shows how to set goals, how to achieve them, what it takes and actually means to do the hard work and why so many people fail at this. I really liked that after each section there are some exercises you can do which makes the book really practical and gets you started right away.

So my conclusion is that I 100% recommend this book if you are looking for a way to actually achieve the things you want to achieve and therefore make the most out of your life.

Ps. And if you are starting on working out i highly recommend reading one of Micheal Matthews other books: 'bigger leaner stronger' for men or 'thinner leaner stronger' for women.

This book is brutal

...and exactly what I needed! An honest kick in the rear that gives me the strength to get after it. Thank you! My workouts have been harder, I’ve set personal bests and I’m willing to go harder to be better than the average! 💪🏼

Love it!

This is gold. Straight forward and easy listen. Mike, gives action steps on the principles he teaches that actually work. I started using his advice in my own life, i was pleased with how well they worked, and so i started teaching the same principles to clients that i train. This book has helped both me and others around me. Great work, Mike!

Old news

I’ve read all Mike’s books and love them, this one however I found quite dissapointing as I didn’t hear anything new. It’s all old research presented with a new cover. Sorry I can’t be more positive...

Better than expected

The title didn't do the book justice. Thought it might just be cheesy fitspo quotes. But so many good scientific, psychological insights. Especially appreciated the advice that talking too much about our goals makes us feel like we've already achieved them, and too much comparison to others diminishes the optimism and gratitude that's key to emotional wealth. Led me to delete Instagram and kill a lot of my social media timesucks. Also discovered the joy of a new morning routine which is waking up early to an audio book plus a long walk.

A superb motivationa tool to get you off your a$$

For some reason I couldn’t download this for the first week after it was released, however, now that it has I have listed to it intently. Mike has a great way of talking which is both enthusiastic and engaging to listen too. His stories are excellent and have helped me overcome a lot of “lazy” moments.
Honestly, well worth listening too. Great stuff Mike (again!)

Motivational, practical and interesting

The myth of the self-made man is one of the fables challenged as Michael Matthew narrates his own book about motivation. The lesson, like most of his research, is as applicable to life in general as it is to hitting the gym.

Matthews analyses the age-old challenge of motivation using evidence-based knowledge instead of marketing hype. His audiobook is accompanied by additional resources, tools, a reference guide, meal plans and more that can be downloaded from a URL mentioned in the book.

He’s a great motivational speaker and instils trust in the listener after the first 10 minutes of self-promotion and praise. Once you get past the self-indulgent opening, Matthew’s ideas begin to shine. He sets out and succeeds in showing that health and fitness is a lot simpler to obtain than some industry bodies would like us to believe.

His focus is on principles, not processes, because a process that works for one person may not work for another. The emotional and psychological benefits of short-term gratification, the psychology of advertising, and the power of formulating, prioritising and accomplishing your own goals are all open for discussion. At heart, this is a book that helps us to understand ourselves better, and the things that make us tick.

Matthews is a positive and encouraging influencer who acknowledges that no one achieves anything alone. The importance of giving, sharing and being accountable is as important as it is to reach out for help. He discusses the 40% rule too – the belief that when you think you are done, you have only reached 40% of what you’re actually capable of.

There’s a plethora of self-help, motivational and workout books flooding the marketplace but this one stands out because of Matthew’s refreshingly positive attitude that goes beyond a simple can-do pep talk. His personal experiences, combined with research, adds additional dimensions that encourages the listener and helps them push beyond their self-imposed limitations.
