Publisher's summary

The fifth book in the USA Today and Wall Street Journal best-selling Carly Moore series.

It’s been a week since Carly Moore’s friend Jerry was run off the road and killed, and the sheriff’s department has already struck out on leads. She’s not about to sit back and let it go, but the last thing she wants is to endanger anyone else. Besides, as she learned long ago, problems come in threes.

A mysterious woman causes a ruckus in the tavern where Carly works and leaves behind a note: We’ve got some unfinished business, Carly Moore. I’ll be in touch. The stranger looks like trouble, and Carly knows it means nothing good. Then, on the heels of that encounter, she gets shocking news: the crime syndicate her father co-ran has been taken down by the authorities.

She’s not foolish enough to think her father has been neutralized, but she realizes she needs to act against him soon if she wants to stop hiding.

The deeper Carly digs into her family’s past, the more dirt she finds. But lies are told for a reason, and there are people around her who are willing to kill to keep the truth hidden.

More secrets, lies and plot twists

The latest installment of Carly Moore waitress/part time detective’s complicated messy life was another twisty, nail biter, could not put it down story. The book picks up following the end of the last book and the death of Jerry. Carly is still hiding from her dangerous and powerful father and living in Drum, a small town disconnected from the rest of the world. She is working as a waitress in the local bar, healing from her painful past, and settling into her relationship with Marco, a deputy sheriff. She still wants to bring down Bart Drummond and her father. Now she’s also concerned about what Hank, her sort of adopted father, is up to. That’s all before Lula’s mother returns to town after being released from prison. Drum is a hot bed of gossip, lies, dirty deals, deception, and powerful men. And honest and kind people like Carly are frequently in the cross hairs. Familiar secondary characters are part of the story while Carly does her usual sleuthing and things get messy and complicated quickly. The book was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters, and an engaging storyline. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Shannon McManus did a great job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly.

Another wonderful Carly book

Carly finds more information about her family and about what is going on in Drum. Just because Hardshaw was taken down doesn't mean Carly isn't still in danger from her father. Carly can probably trust only Marco and Hank but too many people know who she really is to keep her safe from her father. There are only two more books before the end of the series. I can't wait for the next book.

Another solid Carly Moore book!

I absolutely love this series and this was a great 5th book! We get to continue on the journey with Carly in the small town with the regular cast of characters.

I loved that we got to see a little more about Carly’s past, a bit of the darker side of Hank, and all of the men in Carly’s life are there to make it all more interesting.

Great narration as well!

Looking foreword to another book! Yes, I’m a greedy Carly Moore fan!

What is happening

I just keep waiting for the Marco Carly deal to end. It’s boring blah with no Wyatt. I’m waiting for Marco to be behind everything helping Bart & Wyatt trying to save everyone from them. But it’s really annoying bc it’s not interesting enough with just Carly & Marco fighting crime & no real dynamics bn characters esp the way Wyatt was written out basically. Ugh.
