Story
It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

Stop with the love triangle already!!!!!
This was my least favorite book in the series. I just can't with the love triangle anymore. SPOILERS AHEAD: I've been rooting for Evie this whole time, but finding it hard to care about her anymore when she's selfish and loves/sleeps with whoever is in front of her at the time. No loyalty? No commitment to either guy? A 17 year old pregnant girls sleeping with two guys? Gross!! I kind of just want Jack and Aric to kick Evie out and marry each other. They're both too good for her. There was too little action in this one as well. Waaayyyyy too much Evie whining. Very little strong empress in this one. And with all that said, I couldn't stop listening. I was completely hooked. Pissed off, but hooked. That's why I still had to give it at least 4 stars. I just hope the next book settles the love triangle early and doesn't drag it through to the end. I think we're all over it and want to focus more on the game.

I loved this installment! As always, sad that it ends and I can't continue everyday listening to Evie's story. I am Team Death and loved that Arik was so much a part of this book and we got to watch him develop and change. A must listen!

Enough with the love triangle
Spoiler...
I liked the series and finished the book in a day but enough with the love triangle already. Evie flip flopping between the two guys make her very unlikable. It almost felt like she was looking for and hanging on to excuses not to be with death. Can you really blame the guy for flipping his switch after millennia of betrayal? She kept feeling bad for dragging Jack into the whole arcana mess. Then leave the poor guy be and maybe he’ll find love again later down the road. Death on the other hand can’t be with another woman besides Evie. Even though it is a hard choice, it is a rather clear choice I think. Evie should grow up, stay loyal to death, give birth to this baby that could potentially end the game and provide Jack with a reborn/nice world to live in.

Both K. C & Emma Galvin Slay in this book!
First of all if you haven't read this series stop reading this review right now and go read it (or listen to it, because Emma Galvin is QUEEN and slays narrating this). Seriously, this is one of my all time favorite series ever. Kresley Cole does an amazing job with the world building, the character development, the ROMANCE, and the non-stop action.
Like the previous books, I couldn't stop listening to The Dark Calling. While I wouldn't label this book as a "filler" book, it is definitely leading everything to the end and starting to wrap up the story. However, my mind was still blown away at the plot twists and I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire thing. We have different POV again, from Aric, Jack and of course Evie, which really helped expand the story and give the characters some more growth. Also, let me just say I have no idea what #team I'm on. Team Jack? Team Aric? Can I be Team Both? Is that possible?! And... I had some serious tears. Like, really. I was cleaning my kitchen listening to this when I screamed out "NOOOO!!!!!" in anguish and scared the crap out of my toddler (don't worry, she's fine). It did break my heart though (no spoilers). Anyway, I've been waiting on this book FOREVER and it did not disappoint me. I'm just super sad I finished it so quickly and now have to wait for the next one.
As far as the narration goes for the audible version: As I've mentioned above, Emma Galvin slayed it. She has a way of just sucking you right into the story and you completely tune out everything else around you. I'm VERY picky with my audio books. I can't just listen to any narrator and usually have a hard time finding one I love, but Emma Galvin is on POINT, ya'll. She has the best accent for Jack and Aric both. I honestly forget I'm only listening to one person. Definitely can't wait to check out more of her work!

im sticking it out for now...
I love this series for the actual plot: the other Major Archana, how we learn about their powers and weaknesses, and how the world will be brought back.
The Jack vs Death dilemma and Evie's indecisiveness almost made me put down the book, even 6 books into the series. I physically have to keep from rolling my eyes because her indecisiveness DOES NOT EVOLVE, DOES NOT DEVELOPE. It could have been written so well, but it felt like reading the same chapter 5 times throughout the book. Seriously, give us more of the other ACTUALLY INTERESTING characters, not this brat with no character development outside of who she is going to pick to love.

The rollercoaster ride continued!
The ride that Kresley Cole started us on in Poison Princess has continued. This installment had me on the edge of my seat as well as keeping the Kelenex company going, one tissue at a time. I am even now tearing up thinking back on this one.
If you are reading reviews to see if this is the book for you...I recommend starting with book one, Poison Princess. Get to know Evangeline, Jack, and Arik. Fall in love with a blonde girl who doesn't want to hurt a soul. Know the strength and determination of a boy who came from nothing. Feel for the knight that has always been perpetually alone. If you get through book one...you will be hooked to the very end.

Game set match
I had to wait a little longer for the audiobook on this one, but it was well worth it.
In the Dark Calling, the un-activated Card is revealed, and I was honestly surprised who it was. I thought it was going to be Jack. Nope. Evie is given the shock of a lifetime, and when she thinks she is secure in her place with Death everything turns upside down, and she is forced to flee into the ash.
At first, I thought Evie was acting like a “B” because she wasn’t getting her way. It turns out her thoughts and feelings were very much founded. I veered more towards Team Jack in this book where all other books I didn’t like either Death or Jack. Jack stepped up in this one. However, I still don’t understand why she can’t have both? Oh right because this is YA. LOL
The battle is set, and the lines are drawn, it is a matter of who will be the ultimate victor in this game of the gods.
I am giving The Dark Calling 5 boundless Stars; it is another perfect addition to this fantastic series. That I honestly want to see brought to the big or small screen.

Weak Wimpy Heroine, remarlably Boring!
Soo wimpy!, The heroine spent the entire series howling. No 17 year old THAT stupid. I spent the entire series expecting the Heroine to buck up and access her power. She relies on all male character's to save her : YAWN,, what a bore. I was especially disgusted at rhe demise of Thanos the horse. Very, very disappointing and I would not recommend this series.

SPELLBINDING BOOK & A Must Read Series
This whole series of Arcana Chronicles has been some of the best books I have ever probably listened to with all their intrigues & twists, getting to know the main characters so well has made me feel I am with them every step of the way & wondering how would I have coped what I would have done as far as the personal feeling are concerned?
This book brings a lot together yet still so very much more to come setting the stage for yet another big, no, maybe the biggest ever showdown.
What will happen who will triumph all is to play for.....
I think I know who I want to be together & what outcome I want but then it shifts to another perspective.....
FABULOUS SERIES, I highly recommend The Arcana Chronicles

Fantastic !
Amazing as always ! Kresley does it again. The only author who can make you feel just as torn on a decision as the main character ! #teamjack #teamaric #idontknow

Compelling and completely unique
Amaaaaazing series and each book just gets better and better!
Kresley Cole is my all time favourite author and this series is brilliant. Could not put it down, love the characters the believable and enviable love triangle and utterly unique story based on Tarot cards as actual people, so clever, so fresh, so entertaining!
Genius!

Gearing up well for the ending
Enjoyed the story greatly. Appreciated the note from the Author at the end to signal that the end is coming, and it does feel like it’s gearing up well for that. The torn romance is very poignant and the “ash” remains a terrifying place. Good characters who I’m interested in following. Although was very sad about the death of one of the characters in this book. Great series and great individual book. Can’t wait for the next one!

🖤
I was putting off reading these books for so long, dreading getting to this point because I knew only 1 would rain and I'd have to wait. This has easily become one of my favourite series to date and I'm devastated that the last book isn't out yet but it's totally worth the wait I'm sure.
Kresley Cole you've nailed it again. 👏
