Not my fire pit

I know not why I got this book. Romance is not my area of enjoyment. I do try some of it every now in then just to see if there is an author I might like. I strongly believe a good author can write anything and make you like it.

This guy sells his soul to the devil, because his wife left him. I soon figured out his wife left him, cause he is an idiot. Plus if he was a great lover, his first wife would have not left him. I mean make a woman scream in bed and she is yours for a life time. I have been married 34 years and no matter what others say, that is the secret.

The female lead is almost as dumb as him so they do go together. The story not only makes these two look stupid, but make the devil look like an idiot. To escape the devil, it seems you just have to kill yourself. How dead people kill themselves is beyond me. I know they are not dead people, they are god and demon, but still.

Narrator is good.

'Eh! It was 'Eh

This is a new series for me....so I started at the beginning, book 0.5 as it were. This wasn't at all what I thought the series would be like. A lot of old language, not a lot of spice, very short and really anticlimactic, but what did I really expect from a book that is what not even 2 hours long? It gave a short back story to the rest of the books. I decided to listen to book 1 in the series before writing this review, and I'm glad I did! Book 1, The Darkest Night, was more what I thought the series would be like.

I could have done without this prequel, and if I had to do it over again I wouldn't get it because it is SOOO different than the rest of series that it almost turned me off to the series before I got started.

It's not that it is poorly written, and there is some "tension" in a good way, but ...well....'eh....kind of covers it.

Not really a prequel...

Having read the first book in the series, I have a really hard time thinking of this as a prequel. It had very little to do with any back story. It seems that it was a totally different story and different world that the author tied in at the end with a mention of creating a box out of bones. It gave so little insight into the book I read that it really isn't even worth having taken the time to listen to. Maybe it'll become more important as I listen to more of the series but right now I'm thinking I wasted my money.

Informative

While this book was not as good as the others in the series it provides a lot of background information. It still had an interesting story line and an unexpected ending. I think it is worth listening too so as to put the other books in perspective.

Great short story for Lords fans!

This is a great prequel to the Lords of the Underworld series. It's not a requirement for the LOTU series but it was a great companion read.

Was not what I expected

I love Gena Showalter, don't get me wrong. But, this was a disappointment. The storyline could have been expanded and the lovemaking scene not really thrilling. It was not very good and I don't recommend anyone wasting time listening to it. Her other books are fantastic.

one of my favorites!

Would you listen to The Darkest Fire again? Why?

I have listened to this series 4 times now and it is better every time.

What about Max Bellmore’s performance did you like?

Max bellmore total pulls you in to the story. He is right up there with Phil Gigante.

Any additional comments?

This series is as good as the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Very awesome!

Yum! Great beginning!

Unlike so many UF/PNR series where you have to deal with intense world building, Showalter writes a gorgeous book about love, and gives us a small but fascinating glimpse at her LOTU series. Maddox and Ashton are extraordinary H/H, and Showalter breaks you into her world of myths, gods, angels, demons, and immortal warriors slowly.

I highly recommend this series. Each book is fantastic. 1, 2 and 4 are my favorite. And I'm on 6 now.

I love the series, despite very low expectations. Fantastic narrator as well.

This book is weak and not relevant to the series.

The story and characters had no depth. I finished the book with no desire to know how their story would continue. Ok, I understand it is just a short story in an anthology but I have to say, I really thought there should have been more to this story.

Only slightly interesting

Would you try another book from Gena Showalter and/or Max Bellmore?

I didn't realize this would be like listening to mythology. The reader did ok, but couldn't bring a lot of life to this book. Glad I only paid $2 for it.

What three words best describe Max Bellmore’s voice?

Slightly monotone
