Story
In Savages, Don Winslow introduced Ben and Chon, twentysomething best friends who risk everything to save the girl they both love, O. Now, in his high-octane prequel, Winslow reaches back in time to tell the story of how Ben, Chon, and O became the people they are. Spanning from 1960s Southern California to the recent past, it is a tale of family in all its forms. As the younger generation does battle with drug dealers and crooked cops, they learn that their future is inextricably linked with their parents' history.

He's a man who knows fire, who can read the traces it leaves behind like a roadmap. When he's called in to examine an unusual claim, the tracks of the fire tell him that something's wrong. So wrong that he violates his own cardinal rule - "You don't get personal, you don't get emotional. Whatever you do, you don't get involved" - and plunges into the case.

When Tim Kearney draws a license plate across the throat of a Hell's Angel, he's pretty much a dead man. It's his third crime and, according to California law, that gives him "life without the possibility of parole". Killing a Hell's Angel also makes him a dead man on any prison yard in California. That's when the DEA makes Kearney an offer: impersonate the late, legendary dope smuggler Bobby Z so that the agency can trade him to Don Huertero, northern Mexico's drug kingpin, for a captured DEA agent.

Publisher's summary
NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY Washington Post • NPR • Financial Times • The Guardian • Booklist • New Statesman • Daily Telegraph • Irish Times • Dallas Morning News • Sunday Times • New York Post
“A big, sprawling, ultimately stunning crime tableau.” – Janet Maslin, New York Times
“You can’t ask for more emotionally moving entertainment.” – Stephen King
“One of the best thriller writers on the planet.” – Esquire
The explosive, highly anticipated conclusion to the epic Cartel trilogy from the New York Times bestselling author of The Force
What do you do when there are no borders? When the lines you thought existed simply vanish? How do you plant your feet to make a stand when you no longer know what side you’re on?
The war has come home.
For over forty years, Art Keller has been on the front lines of America’s longest conflict: the War on Drugs. His obsession to defeat the world’s most powerful, wealthy, and lethal kingpin—the godfather of the Sinaloa Cartel, Adán Barrera—has left him bloody and scarred, cost him people he loves, even taken a piece of his soul.
Now Keller is elevated to the highest ranks of the DEA, only to find that in destroying one monster, he has created thirty more that are wreaking even more chaos and suffering in his beloved Mexico. But not just there.
Barrera’s final legacy is the heroin epidemic scourging America. Throwing himself into the gap to stem the deadly flow, Keller finds himself surrounded by enemies—men that want to kill him, politicians that want to destroy him, and worse, the unimaginable—an incoming administration that’s in bed with the very drug traffickers that Keller is trying to bring down.
Art Keller is at war with not only the cartels, but with his own government. And the long fight has taught him more than he ever imagined. Now, he learns the final lesson—there are no borders.
In a story that moves from deserts south of the border to Wall Street, from the slums of Guatemala to the marbled corridors of Washington, DC, Winslow follows a new generation of narcos, the cops that fight them, the street traffickers, the addicts, the politicians, money-launderers, real-estate moguls, and mere children fleeing the violence for the chance of a life in a new country.
A shattering tale of vengeance, violence, corruption, and justice, this last novel in Don Winslow’s magnificent, award-winning, internationally bestselling trilogy is packed with unforgettable, drawn-from-the-headlines scenes. Shocking in its brutality, raw in its humanity, The Border is an unflinching portrait of modern America, a story of—and for—our time.

Thank you Don Winslow!! These characters have been brought to life not only by your incredible words but by
Ray Porter’s spectacular narration. Art Keller has fought the war on drugs with bravery and honesty- in his own way. And while yes, the story is extremely biased, some may say, I say it’s TRUTH. And the truth hurts. Nico’s story broke my heart, finally putting a face on those children who sit in detention centers waiting for a chance to live in peace and possible happiness. It broke my heart to hear how he came to America and the truth that was his life. And he was one of the lucky ones. I wish I could have learned what happened to him

The best of the three!
I really don't have the words to properly describe how great I think this book, (and this series) is. This, i.m.o., is the best of the three, which surprised me because I didn't think it could get any better than the first two. This is up in my TOP 5 audio books of all time. I have been a member of Audible for 15 years, with a library of over 1200 titles. Unless you are adverse to the violence, you will probably enjoy the heck out of this book. I wish there were more like it! It's the kind of book that I hate finishing because you know the next book will not hold a candle to it.

Amazing well written
Very shortly into the book I was hooked and honestly could not put it down. This was easily the best book in the series and that is no slight on the others being that they were great as well. The overall pace of the story was nearly perfect you can't help but like each character wether they were good or bad. Very cohesive from start to finish and my only wish was that it was longer.

Much anticipated, exceeded expectations. The use of current, in truest sense of word, current issues our country is facing was awesome. If only we could have the fictional characters portrayed in the book stand up and Be HEARD AND BELIEVED, what a wonderful thing that would be!

Couldn't stop listening...
I rarely purchase 12+ hour audiobooks because I can only listen sporadically and end up losing the thread. Not this time. I have listened to the other 2 books in the trilogy and bought this without hesitation despite its 29 hour length. I was hooked the moment I started and just HAD to finish, everything else be damned. The story is gripping, characters interesting and unlike the TV series Narcos, this book does an excellent job of asking the fundamental question: what is it about America that makes it the largest consumer of pain numbing drugs in the world. There are multiple story lines and I for one, would love to know if Nico and Flor ever reunited (fingers crossed : - ) .
A HUGE shout out to Ray Porter. He makes an already excellent book, pop. His range of accents, emotions, attitude, etc. is very wide and he uses it effectively for the large collection of very interesting characters in this book. I think I'm going to go through his catalog and buy books by unknown (to me) writers just because of Ray Porter.
Highly recommended!
