Story
The benefits of restrictive diets like paleo and keto have been touted for more than a decade, but as renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, or "Dr. B", illuminates in this groundbreaking audiobook, the explosion of studies on the microbiome makes it abundantly clear that elimination diets are in fact hazardous to our health. What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases.

It's Good. Nothing New Though.

Publisher's Summary
Internationally renowned dermatologist and research scientist Dr. Whitney Bowe presents, for the first time, the connection between a healthy gut and radiant, clear skin, with a 21-day program to maximize skin health and beauty.
Every year, nearly 80 million Americans will consult their doctors about their skin. In fact, skin disorders beat out anxiety, depression, back pain, and diabetes as the number-one reason Americans see their doctors. Unfortunately, however, the vast majority will receive only a surface-level treatment, leaving the underlying conditions at the root of their skin issues unresolved. Skin doesn't lie; it reflects overall health in unimaginable ways.
In The Beauty of Dirty Skin, internationally renowned dermatologist and scientist Dr. Whitney Bowe shows readers that skin health is much more than skin deep. As a pioneering researcher on the cutting edge of the gut-brain-skin axis, she explains how the spectrum of skin disorders - from stubborn acne and rosacea to psoriasis, eczema, and premature wrinkling - are manifestations of irregularities rooted in the gut. Lasers, scalpels, creams, and prescription pads alone will not guarantee the consistently healthy, glowing skin we all seek. Instead, Dr. Bowe focuses on the microbiome - where trillions of microbes "speak" to your skin via the brain - and highlights the connection between sleep, stress, diet, gastrointestinal health, and the health of your skin.
With simple explanations of the science, do-it-yourself practical skincare strategies, and a life-changing 21-day program, The Beauty of Dirty Skin is your roadmap to great skin from the inside out and the outside in.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your Library section along with the audio.
Critic Reviews
"The Beauty of Dirty Skin shows us once and for all that there's more to healthy skin than expensive creams and clinical treatments. Dr. Bowe's revolutionary, three-week program takes advantage of the gut-brain-skin connection to resolve the underlying health issues responsible for stubborn skin. If you struggle with skin issues, this book is a must read." (Amy Myers, MD, author of The Thyroid Connection)
"Your path to the Bowe Glow passes through your intestines, where supporting the right bacteria can rejuvenate and resuscitate your skin. Dr. Bowe takes you past simple nutrients to the front lines of the battle for your skin health." (Mehmet Oz, MD)
"Dr. Bowe, one of the nation's top dermatologists, is a pioneer of the gut-brain-skin connection. In The Beauty of Dirty Skin, she combines her clinical expertise, insights into the latest scientific developments, and profound discoveries in natural medicine into a powerful prescription for skin health. An eye-opening read for both patients and physicians." (Anthony Youn, MD, "America's Holistic Plastic Surgeon" and author of The Age Fix)

Sales pitch for natural products
Book sounded great when the Author read the first chapter, but then it switches to an awful narrator who uses awkward inflections and fake emphasis. Hardly a book of science—it's a sales pitch for vitamins over laden with boring stories that all seem to include the miracle of quitting fast food. How revolutionary.

A lot of good info...and self promotion
This book is very detailed and has a lot of scientific references (I didn’t check them but I’m assuming all the “number of studies have shown” are legit. The good doctor spends a lot of time telling the listener about her many accomplishments and tries to position herself as a revolutionary in the gut microbiome world...maybe she is but I could’ve used less of her patting herself on the back. I get it, she needed to let us know she’s qualified. It was just a lot at the outset. However, once you get through all of that, she has good info and advice. Maybe just skip her intro and get to the good stuff.

Almond milk isn't a whole food
I admire Dr. Bowe's enthusiasm, and the part about the microbiome was interesting. I thinks she's got a bit of an identity crisis whether she's a trendy celebrity doc or a serious scientist. I have a pet peeve about someone encouraging whole foods but pushing almond milk. Last I checked, almonds did not have mammary glands. I thought from the title and the first sections that the take away would be to use fewer overpriced skin products, but then she goes on to hock overpriced skin products. Ultimately, I enjoyed the listen, but didn't take away very much that was helpful.

A lot of waffle
Two chapters in and she’s still talking about using laser and skin cream to treat conditions. Feels more like a biography about her career/life than a book with useful information. It’s very repetitive - I couldn’t keep listening.
