Publisher's summary

Timid Renata Molloy is in mortal peril after overhearing details of a breathtaking conspiracy. But her courageous and near-identical cousin Jane Smith—homeless and just two-and-elevenpence away from the workhouse—is willing to take her place if it means a roof over her head and plenty to eat. So Jane, with the help of Captain Henry March of Scotland Yard, whose hand in marriage she once refused, finds herself incognito at stately Luttrell Marches, enmeshed in a mystery of secret formulae, political plots, and a maze of secret doors and secret passages …

Loved It!

Thought I had read all of Patricia Wentworth's books and then stumbled on this book. Great narrator and a very suspenseful storyline throughout most of the story. Hope others discover it too Pretty sure most would enjoy. Some parts could of used some editing as they went on too long but overall did not detract from enjoyment of the listen.

Old fashioned adventure

This is reminiscent of The Secret Adversary, Agatha Christie's 1922 introduction to Tommy & Tuppence, (which I love) and is very typical of stories written for independent young women of the day. No insipid heroine, this girl is smart and resourceful and is not dependent upon a man to rescue her as she keeps up an impersonation of her cousin in a house full of anarchists, explores hidden passages, and discovers secret agendas, including an antigovernmental plot. It is well written and everything this genre was meant to be. The readers voice is pleasant with good characterization, though I didn't agree with the pronunciation of some of the words which was bit distracting .
