Story
Inspector Treadles, Charlotte Holmes’ friend and collaborator, has been found locked in a room with two dead men, both of whom worked with his wife at the great manufacturing enterprise she has recently inherited. Rumors fly. Had Inspector Treadles killed the men because they had opposed his wife’s initiatives at every turn? Had he killed in a fit of jealous rage because he suspected Mrs. Treadles of harboring deeper feelings for one of the men? To make matters worse, he refuses to speak on his own behalf, despite the overwhelming evidence against him.

Twenty-six-year-old Beatrice Hyde-Clare is far too shy to investigate the suspicious death of a fellow guest in the Lake District. A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable. And yet that's exactly what she does.

As much as Beatrice Hyde-Clare relished the challenge of figuring out who murdered a fellow guest during a house party in the Lake District, she certainly does not consider herself an amateur investigator. So when a London dandy falls dead at her feet in the entryway of a London Daily Gazette, she feels no compulsion to investigate. It was a newspaper office, after all, and reporters are already on the case as are the authorities.

Publisher's Summary
Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, is back solving new cases in the Victorian-set mystery series from the USA Today best-selling author of The Hollow of Fear.
As "Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective," Charlotte Holmes has solved murders and found missing individuals. But she has never stolen a priceless artwork - or rather, made away with the secrets hidden behind a much-coveted canvas.
But Mrs. Watson is desperate to help her old friend recover those secrets and Charlotte finds herself involved in a fever-paced scheme to infiltrate a glamorous Yuletide ball where the painting is one handshake away from being sold and the secrets a bare breath from exposure.
Her dear friend Lord Ingram, her sister Livia, Livia's admirer Stephen Marbleton - everyone pitches in to help and everyone has a grand time. But nothing about this adventure is what it seems and disaster is biding time on the grounds of a glittering French chateau, waiting only for Charlotte to make a single mistake...
Critic Reviews
“These books, which recast Sherlock Holmes as Charlotte Holmes, are perfect for those who adore layered stories. Unignorable questions of gender, expectation and privilege lurk beneath complex mysteries and a slowly scorching romance.” (The Washington Post)
“Fast-paced storytelling and witty prose add further appeal for those who like their historical mysteries playful." (Publishers Weekly)
“Thoughtful yet brief remarks critique patriarchy, heteronormativity, and colonialism, fitting organically into an absorbing whodunwhat arc. An exciting addition to the mystery series; Holmes meets Oceans 11 meets A Vindication of the Rights of Woman.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

Dissolve bad review listen to all four in a row
I listened to all four books this week. I had read some reviews by other listeners who felt that books 3 and 4 fell short of their predecessors and unfortunately chose not to finish the books. By listening to all four straight through you will see that books 3 and 4 are necessary to the bigger picture of integrating new characters whilst building on the originals in order to manuever them into the next adventure . For those of you who did not finish you may want to listen to the first two again and then proceed with the following 2 in order to enjoy the big adventure underlying the current adventure.
My only problem with listening straight through was I developed a craving for baked goods and butter.

Brava Sherry! Brava Kate!
Sherry Thomas continues her incredibly clever Lady Sherlock series with what Hollywood would call a caper, and off we go to France. This book was a bit more light-hearted than the earlier ones; the mystery was intricate but not life-threatening, and the danger did not seem so close. As a result, we get to know and understand more about Charlotte and her sister Livia, Lord Ashburton, and the always surprising Mrs. Watson.
This series has been delightful, and the pleasure is enhanced by Kate Reading’s excellent narration. Start with the first installment and enjoy.

Twists and turns
Just when you think you know where this story is heading, it takes you around a blind curve. All of the previous main characters are involved in this caper. Some old enemies return. We find out why Charlotte dresses as she does. Lots of tension with feelings. Excellent narration, as always.

Another suspenseful adventure
Enjoyed the continuing story of Charlotte Holmes. Really Liked the continuing relationships and the twists and turns that held my interest. Rather surprising back story on my dear Mrs Watson and the sexual tension between Ash and Charolette was very nicely handled. Kept true to their character. Nice to have the sister, Olivia, grow in character in this one. She seemed such a weak sheltered girl before. Anxiously awaiting next one!

Another complex story that reflex issues of today in the 1800s. Well maybe not the criminal empire of Moriarty but gender, power, love, and intrigue. I love these stories and am only disappointed when they are read and I have to wait forever for the next installment.
