Creative but hard to stay engaged in

This is the first book in the Hungry City Chronicles, there are four books in this series. I was really excited to read this book; I thought it was something I was going to absolutely love. It ended up being okay but wasn't as engaging as I had hoped.

I listened to this on audiobook and the narration was well done. Edwards does a great job with having distinct voices for each character and with portraying emotion. It’s a book I would recommend listening to if you like audiobooks.

Part of my issue with this book was all the jumping around between characters; this made it so I never really engaged with any of the characters that well. When I finally really started getting into the story it jumped somewhere else.

The idea of cities that eat each other for resources is incredibly creative but I had some trouble suspending my disbelief about how this all worked. This was just a concept that was hard for me to process and really envision.

The characters were all so-so for me. They were kind of interesting but not all that engaging.

Overall this was an okay read but I don't plan on continuing the series. I just wasn’t that engaged in the story or the characters. The idea behind this alternate world is interesting but hard to find believable. I’ll be seeking out other steampunk series to read in the future.

Only some small problems

Overall, I liked both the story and performance. My only real problems are that the reader struggles with the female voices and the antagonist's plan is bat-shit crazy.

But it was alright.

It is one of the few times that I may think the movie will be better than the book...
It feels like it was a screen play, not a novel.
Short on details, short choppy sceens, not huge on dialogue... you.know, things that would be taken care of during production and filming....
But it was alright.

What a treat!

Would you listen to Mortal Engines again? Why?

One of those books were you could to help fill in the spots you don't remember when listing the next books.

What other book might you compare Mortal Engines to and why?

It's too different to be compared.

What about Barnaby Edwards’s performance did you like?

The range of voices and tone his set for each location

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Keep Rolling, London is on the rise!

this is a quick audiobook to listen to. You're going to love it and fly through it. I'm really excited about the movie coming out next Christmas. Hopefully Peter Jackson expands upon the novel

interesting concepts can't plug the plot holes.

Typical YA dystopian novel. Predictable and corny. A passable read if you don't think too hard.

This is just an amazing book!

Amazing narrator, amazing story and characters. I usually listen to audiobooks in the evening as they have the added value of rocking me to sleep when I struggle relaxing. Usually I fall asleep in fifteen to thirty minutes maximum. But i found with this book that it actually did the opposite, it kept me awake with adventures so awesome that I just had to listen to what was happening next!

I loved it and I’m looking forward to the film now.

A fantastic alternative to the apocalypse stories we know and love as science fiction fans. Gripping your attention all the way through with some truly brilliant reading, I’m off to listen to the next book.....

Audible version at last

Would you listen to Mortal Engines again? Why?

I originally read this book when it was first published and loved it. I have been waiting for it to appear on audible as I do a lot of long distance driving and like to listen to a good story.Firstly I think this is Reeves best book to date. The concept of municipal Darwinism is a great way to explore flaws in today's society. The characters are engaging and a blessed relief from the usual simplistic cliches. The story is gripping, engaging and heartfelt and the audio version cannot be faulted. There is a forthcoming film of this book. I'm not surprised. I was initially concerned though as these kind of stories get ruined as they are translated to the big screen, but then discovered it was being produced by the Lord of the Rings team. I would urge you to listen first though, as the visual description is so vivid you don't need anyone else to produce them for you.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There are many engaging characters, each with something special to offer the story. It would do a disservice to select just one. Obviously Hester and Tom are wonderful as is Anna Fang, but as someone who has read the following installment too, Shrike is the character that pulls at my heart.

Have you listened to any of Barnaby Edwards’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Good narrator.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The part where Shrike explains why he wants to kill Hester. The destruction of other cities.

A different type of story

I decided to give this series a go after seeing the teaser trailer for the movie. From the trailer to what i have heard I can see there is possibly going to be some big changes from the book to the movie. The story is unique and is full of action and adventure a good listen or read.

read it before Jackson's film comes out

thinking about putting my house on tracks and having it eat the neighborhood. then I'll roam the suburban fields looking for fat two story homes with double garages. after I have the resources I can corner the market with electric houses on wheels sticking it to Elon musk and his puny Tesla cars!
