Creative but hard to stay engaged in

This is the first book in the Hungry City Chronicles, there are four books in this series. I was really excited to read this book; I thought it was something I was going to absolutely love. It ended up being okay but wasn't as engaging as I had hoped.

I listened to this on audiobook and the narration was well done. Edwards does a great job with having distinct voices for each character and with portraying emotion. It’s a book I would recommend listening to if you like audiobooks.

Part of my issue with this book was all the jumping around between characters; this made it so I never really engaged with any of the characters that well. When I finally really started getting into the story it jumped somewhere else.

The idea of cities that eat each other for resources is incredibly creative but I had some trouble suspending my disbelief about how this all worked. This was just a concept that was hard for me to process and really envision.

The characters were all so-so for me. They were kind of interesting but not all that engaging.

Overall this was an okay read but I don't plan on continuing the series. I just wasn’t that engaged in the story or the characters. The idea behind this alternate world is interesting but hard to find believable. I’ll be seeking out other steampunk series to read in the future.

Only some small problems

Overall, I liked both the story and performance. My only real problems are that the reader struggles with the female voices and the antagonist's plan is bat-shit crazy.

Not what I'm used to, but...

I had wished for more detail in the story, but it is still a good read.

Steampunk meets Post Apocalyptic with a Dystopian feel!

Aside from some tense issues very great! I loved the story. Loved the steampunk-sequel feel!

Extraordinary world. Ordinary plot.

Performance was fine. The narrator made every character distinctive. Hey Amazon, I need more words.

But it was alright.

It is one of the few times that I may think the movie will be better than the book...
It feels like it was a screen play, not a novel.
Short on details, short choppy sceens, not huge on dialogue... you.know, things that would be taken care of during production and filming....
But it was alright.

What a treat!

Would you listen to Mortal Engines again? Why?

One of those books were you could to help fill in the spots you don't remember when listing the next books.

What other book might you compare Mortal Engines to and why?

It's too different to be compared.

What about Barnaby Edwards’s performance did you like?

The range of voices and tone his set for each location

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Keep Rolling, London is on the rise!

This is just an amazing book!

Amazing narrator, amazing story and characters. I usually listen to audiobooks in the evening as they have the added value of rocking me to sleep when I struggle relaxing. Usually I fall asleep in fifteen to thirty minutes maximum. But i found with this book that it actually did the opposite, it kept me awake with adventures so awesome that I just had to listen to what was happening next!

I loved it and I’m looking forward to the film now.

A fantastic alternative to the apocalypse stories we know and love as science fiction fans. Gripping your attention all the way through with some truly brilliant reading, I’m off to listen to the next book.....

very good story, well crafted universe

Barnaby Williams creates believable characters with lots of different accents and voices. the story is great and for me has been the best introduction to steampunk that actually is believable.

A different type of story

I decided to give this series a go after seeing the teaser trailer for the movie. From the trailer to what i have heard I can see there is possibly going to be some big changes from the book to the movie. The story is unique and is full of action and adventure a good listen or read.

read it before Jackson's film comes out

thinking about putting my house on tracks and having it eat the neighborhood. then I'll roam the suburban fields looking for fat two story homes with double garages. after I have the resources I can corner the market with electric houses on wheels sticking it to Elon musk and his puny Tesla cars!
