Story
Mankind in its present state has been around for a quarter of a million years, yet only the last 4,000 have been of any significance. So, what did we do for nearly 250,000 years? We huddled in caves and around small fires, fearful of the things that we didn't understand. It was more than explaining why the sun came up; it was the mystery of enormous birds with heads of men and rocks that came to life. So we called them "gods" and "demons", begged them to spare us, and prayed for salvation.

Story
I am going to die here. My name is Mindy Mason; I’m a student from the University. I volunteered for one experiment; it was to be for one day only. I want to go home now. I hear cries, screams, and shrieks in the night. Some of the voices sound as if they are coming from the pillow under my head, others as if from a radio behind a door in a far room, and yet others come from my dreams, thus layering my terror. I know Wendy has a knife; perhaps she has killed again. How can I stop her?

Story
The story follows the unnerving experience of a nameless narrator who is summoned to care for a reclusive friend and his sister in an old, haunted mansion. Both are mentally and physically unwell, their paranoia and agitation being exacerbated by strange happenings in and around the property. Soon, the narrator himself begins to experience the eerie old house and its ghostly inclinations. Poe ties themes of madness, mystery, suspense, death and the ethereal together into one of the most gripping short stories ever published.

Publisher's Summary
Don't Read Alone: Bone Chilling Stories of True Horror & Turmoil.
What scares you? What wakes you up at night? What makes you afraid of the dark? These are questions that can have many different answers. Maybe it's that disturbing noise you hear in the hallway every night, as soon as you turn the lights out, but every time you go to see what it is, nothing's there.
Or maybe you're someone who is rarely afraid. Maybe you think you've heard it all, and scary movies don't scare you anymore. Ghosts and poltergeists are only found in Hollywood studios, and nothing like that would ever happen to you.
That's all well and good, but what about the mysteries that have been researched and poured over, but for which there is still no logical explanation? What about the monsters that live among us, walking the streets constantly looking for their next victims? And what about those stories that are almost too horrific to be true?
Here, you will find all of those stories. Stories that will astound you, terrify you, and make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. Each of these 10 tales are true. All of these characters are real, and they were all once people just like you.
Here is a preview of what's inside:
- Murder on the Greyhound
- Staten Island's Missing Children
- Colonel Rathbone's Murderous Insanity
- The Macabre Celebrity of Issei Sagawa
- Disappearance in Death Valley
- Phantom Killer of Hinterkaifeck
- Much, much more!

Decent Collection of Haunted Stories
I enjoyed these stories. They were a bit short and felt more like the reading of a Wikipedia entry, but I liked that I actually knew very little about the stories and this served as a great introduction for me to do further research. If you are a seasoned fan of actual hauntings then you may know these, those who are not this is a great start. Masters did an ok job with the narration, the final editing wasn't great as you can tell when he stumbled and restarted a few times. Having heard him do this before on other books you can hear his "ping" when he wants to stop and restart but then leaves the fumble still in. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Horrible things, unsolved crimes, & more!
Spooky Stories
Don't Read Alone: Bone Chilling Stories of True Horror & Turmoil - Bizarre Horror Stories, Book 1
By: Roger P. Mills
Narrated by: Jim Masters
This is not a ghost story book but a book with stories that have bizarre endings, mysterious disappearances, odd aftermath, or unsolved horrible crimes. Some were famous, like the Jim Jones massacre but most were not.
One of the stories I suppose I should've known but didn't is the story of what happened to the friends of Abraham Lincoln, the ones with him the day he was shot at the play. This tells what happens even after death! A very strange story indeed!
It's sad there is so many cruel and unusual things out in this world but what bothered me was the criminals that were deliberately freed without paying for their crimes!
I found this book fascinating and would have given it a 5 star rating but the narrator was so horrible it was almost a crime itself. He repeated sentences, stumbled over words then start over, I heard pages turning, the volume was up and down. If you mess up, do it over correctly! Don't send it in all messed up! Someone is paying you to perform and listeners are paying to hear that performance.
I received this book from Freeaudiblecodes and the review is all my own opinion.

The narrator makes the anthology
This is just a few true crime stories that are basically taken from wiki pages but what makes it interesting is the narrator. He's got sound effects, variations in his voice and really is great at reading boring facts. He also has an English accent, so that adds to it as well.

Horrifying True Stories
The stories within this book are horrifying enough without the clues being just as freaky. The scary part is some of these stories there are no discernible clues. Jim Masters did an amazing job narrating these tales. I received this book for free and this is my honest unbiased review.
