Publisher's summary

When the sheriff is murdered, his son is asked to take his place.

Bobby Trent is a semi-retired rodeo cowboy and the son of a highly respected law officer. When his father, the sheriff, is murdered, Trent is asked to fulfill the remaining months of his term in office. Sheriff Bobby Trent; nobody would have guessed it, but it should be an easy enough task; drink a little coffee, maybe lead a parade. Easy work until he is healthy enough to return to the circuit.

A dead body with no clues

Then, the body of a young woman is discovered face down in the Montana snow. No signs of foul play, no reason for her to be there, and no tracks as to where she came from. Besides the unexplained death, someone is stealing stock from the local ranches and if the owners have their way, that someone is going to hang. Add to that, an out of state reporter trying to stir up a story about a missing girl of some 25 years earlier. Bobby is quickly finding out being Sheriff is more than handing out traffic tickets.

Snow Drift is the latest novel from award-winning, best-selling author, Kwen Griffeth! If you love Longmire, if you are a crime, fiction, or mystery fan, you won’t want to miss this thrill ride!

Mystery

I really liked the narrator I thought he suited this book really well and I was able to follow him.
The book I liked except for the main character who confused me. I can see his character change as the book progressed which I thought the author did really well. I have not come across many books where you can see the change without being told as the book progresses.
My confusion is his love for women. He is attracted to any beautiful women. He wants his old childhood sweetheart and he tries to show her he has changed. Ironically one of the reason she left him was because he was not faithful and in here he seems to forget about her and move onto the next woman which he tells that it is not the right time for them to be together. Than he meets a third woman he is more than happy to sleep with (which he does not do since they get interupted). If it was me I would not go with him if I wanted a long term relationship. To me it shows that he cannot stay faithful to one woman. Yet women are falling over themselves to be noticed by him. I know he wants to change and I see the change except in this area and it looks to me like he does not see what he is doing, if he wants to win a woman for a long term relationship (which I feel like he wants), is wrong. And when one of the woman talks to him about it I felt like he did not feel any remorse, he did not think about it again (internally) after the conversation they had and I got the impression if a woman did come on to him he would have taken her.
For me the romance could have been done a lot better.
I know I talked about it a lot but we see it a few time through out the book so it sticks out like a sore thumb. However, I did give it four stars because I listened to it from beginning to end. For an author to get me to do this deserves that many stars.

Better than book 1!

And I loved Book 1!!
As I listened to this book, I kept thinking about the tv series Longmire. Only Bobby is much younger, and definitely NOT experienced as a lawman. That being said, 'Bad Bobby' stepped into his role as the new sheriff very well while working to remain true to himself and honor his late father.
I had no idea that the story line was going to take the twists and turns it took ( ...oops...I ALMOST wrote a spoiler!). And, while I can usually predict the 'Who' in the 'Whodunit', with this one, I had NO CLUE. For either of the issues that they were dealing with.
I listened to the audiobook version of this story and Paul J McSorley is absolutely perfect for this role. The timber of his voice is perfect, his characters are so good, I can almost picture what they look like based on the descriptions by Kwen and how their voice sounds. Paul is a story teller and he brings art to life.

The story is even better than the narrator!

***** What happens when a man has to fill the shoes of his murdered sheriff father with no law enforcement training or previous desire to be law enforcement? Depends. This man becomes just what he needs to be when murders stalk the high country and surprises himself most of all. Pigheaded enough to step into a murder case instead of calling in the State Bureau even though he is well aware that he is way out of his depth, he does have some advantages by knowing certain local persons who provide invaluable insight into the escalating case. Excellent plot that draws the reader in and won't let go! The characters certainly are interesting and well developed, the imagery of the land and people is outstanding.
The audio is performed by Paul J McSorley and aside from having a voice that is perfect for the book, he has the skills to add to the characters and enhance the storytelling.
I requested and received a free audio copy in a giveaway. Thank you!

Strong plot and narration

The story is compelling and the writing is very good. The author smoothly brings together several story lines while describing a vast rural Montana setting, so I felt very caught up and involved in the story. There is an array of believable, complex characters, and the cultural conflicts with the Native Americans seem to be presented faithfully. The mysteries drive the plot on and make it hard to stop listening,

This book is neither high literature or pure entertainment. None of the characters are completely likable, and there is some disturbing trivialization of violence against one of the female characters in the book, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend this for light listening.

A Great Listen

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request, and have voluntarily left this review. It is great, it has all the important factors, interesting characters, suspense, and humour. Bobby Trent, the newly appointed sheriff, is a injured cowboy just filling in and a little over his head. Untrained, he has an unique method to his policing. When someone finds a body in the snow, Bobby has his work cut out for him. The story will grab you and keep you listening long after you should have turned it off. Well worth the listen.
