Publisher's summary

The strongest emotion of man is fear, and...fear of the unknown is the greatest fear of all.

Could you face fear head-on?

Can you forget all those moments when you thought you wouldn't survive, but did?

This fast-paced post-apocalyptic dystopian fiction series from author Bobby Akart (The Boston Brahmin series and the Prepping for Tomorrow series) has been hailed as a masterpiece of EMP survival fiction. Prepare to learn, as well as be entertained, as the Blackout series continues with Shiloh Ranch.

After a perilous journey replete with highs and lows around every turn, the Rymans reach their destination only to face guns pointing at them from all directions. Did they make a mistake? Should they have stayed home where familiar surroundings may have outweighed the threats closing in on them?

They quickly learn that there is one constant in a post-apocalyptic world - the threat from their fellow man.

This is the fourth book in the best-selling Blackout series. This book does not contain strong language. It is intended to entertain and inform audiences of all ages, including teen and young adults. Although some scenes depict the realistic threat our nation faces from a devastating solar flare, and the societal collapse which will result in the aftermath, it does not contain graphic scenes typical of other books in the post-apocalyptic genre.

A change is narrators!

I have listened to all the Black Out books and several others by this author. You get a voice and character in your head, changing the narrator is a mistake.

Difficult listen...great book

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narration. It is difficult to switch narrators after listening to the first three narrated by Kevin Pierce. Kevin Pierce is not my favorite narrator, but he is easy to listen to and he makes the listeners "feel" the character's emotions. I often have to take a break after listening to a series by Kevin Pierce because his voice really "sticks" with the characters and I find it difficult to change gears. I listen to a few other books by other narrators, then come back to SHTF with Kevin.

What does John David Farrell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Nice voice, clear reading.

Narration change

These books are kind of short for the price. Good series but the narrator change in the middle of the series throws the story off.

Book 4 undeniably one of the best so far

Would you listen to Shiloh Ranch again? Why?

Absolutely , it's a fantastic book and as always with this author it's worth a re-listen .

Who was your favorite character and why?

Allison , she seems to have adapted to and become far more comfortable with her situation then her parents .

Have you listened to any of John David Farrell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes I have , his work is always proffesional on point and he has a great depth to his characters male or female . He ranks right alongside other great narrators like Kevin Pierce .

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Shiloh Ranch , once again the past predicts the future .

Any additional comments?

This is a fantastic series along with Bobby's other works and as well with the others start at book 1 to get the best out of the series .

Have the Ryman's found safety??

Having found Shiloh Ranch and learning to be productive members of the little community there, the Ryman's finally feel safe. But things aren't as good as they seem, they are still fugitives and Ma is intent on finding the ones that got away!

This edition of the series didn't have the same feel as the rest, I'm not sure why to be honest, but I didn't like this as much as the others. Not to say that this wasn't good, because it was very good, it just wasn't as gripping as the rest.

Plot wise, it was fairly fast paced and entertaining. I enjoyed seeing the Ryman's figuring out life on the ranch and getting involved, I also really liked seeing the new characters and getting to see the underground movement against Ma.

Character wise, I still love seeing the Ryman's and how they are progressing. The new characters are well written and developed and I liked them all. I'm intrigued to see what happens and where the Rymans go from here. Roll on Hornet's Nest!! There's a showdown coming :)

This is the first book that I've listened to by John David Farrell and I really enjoyed his narration. Yes the narrator changed during the series, and yes it does take a bit to get used to, but John David Farrell did an amazing job. He is easy to listen to and had a lot of different cadences and tones for the characters. He read the book well and was clear and concise. I've no problem with him narrating the rest of the series.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Another Excellent story in the Black Out Series.

Narrator John David Farrell did an excellent job. Never a dull moment. Looking forward to the next book in the series. David has a way of making you visually see what is going on.

Another Solid Installment in the Blackout Series

What made the experience of listening to Shiloh Ranch the most enjoyable?

Just the continuation of the Ryman's experiences since the lights went out.

What didn’t you like about John David Farrell’s performance?

The simple answer is, he's not Kevin Pierce. It's tough to change gears after listening to three previous books as you get to know the characters the way the first author portrays them. Kevin is so consistent from book to book in a series. From a visual perspective, if this book were a movie, I felt like I would be watching an animation rather than real life. What has made this series so fabulous is how it has felt so real and so easy to relate to the characters. I lost that with this narrator.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really.

Any additional comments?

Bobby is one of my favorite authors and I love that he also interacts with his readers. That makes everything he writes even more real. However, I felt like I got a bit bogged down in the first half or so of the book with all the details on the ranch operation and just factual information in general. A good part of that was likely the narration, just wasn't very exciting. Kevin has the ability to make the listener feel emotions about almost anything no matter how mundane or boring it might be. I will concede that it also may have been that I grew up farming and ranching so I wasn't getting much with which I wasn't already familiar. Whereas I've only been prepping for about 18 mos so I'm still learning so much in that area. Quite a cliffhanger at the end though, so I will anxiously be awaiting the release of Hornet's Nest. I just really hope KP narrates it!

NOT A GOOD IDEA TO CHANGE READERS

I would strongly suggest Mr Akart to think twice when changing readers. Especially 180degree difference type reader from previous three books. Voice, inflection, style and character voices so different that I'm not sure I can listen to the rest of the books in the series. Shame because I really LOVED "The Blackout Series" books.
