German shepherds originally got their name from their skill in helping to herd flocks of animals. They are lively, energetic, and eager to please. German shepherds are also highly intelligent, which is the primary reason why they are so easy to train. They are capable of absorbing and interpreting commands better than most other breeds, with a 95 percent chance of being able to understand commands immediately. They are recognized for their ability to perform with accuracy, and therefore they're used as working dogs in many quick-response fields such as the police force K-9 unit.
Aside from that, they are a very strong and agile breed, making them effective protectors and guardians of the home. In addition, German shepherds are steadfastly loyal and caring creatures, making them suitable for a household with children. I grew up with two German shepherds and can attest to the fact they are truly an unmatched breed in terms of their ability to guard and protect against strangers or intruders while at the same time being incredibly loving and gentle toward their family of humans.
It's also important to understand though, that on the other hand, an untrained German shepherd can disrupt the environment of your home by being unruly and difficult to control. This can lead to frustration and anxiety, which will only be problematic for both you and your dog.
